    Good on em,

I wouldn't sing the Scottish or Welsh anthems. They should either have a British anthem or use GSTQ for the British anthem and England get a new one

should never have taken them in the first place

Beckham was a better choice than Giggs , and I am sure we coulda found a winger easily as good or better than the spoilt little ***** called Bellamy.

God Save The Queen IS the British Anthem, not the English .

I am sure they use Jerusalem at the Commonwealth Games for the English Anthem.

She is still their Queen, whether they are Welsh, Scottish, or Northern Irish. Anyway, when you're competing for GB at the Olympics, God Save The Queen is your national anthem, so you should sing it and be justifiably proud to do so. It may be that they didn't know the words - it's not as if they'll have had to sing it before, unless either played for England at youth level - did Giggs? - before switching allegiance.

No doubt someone will eventually argue that they were making some kind of principled stand, as if one of today's professional footballers could even begin to understand what that means.

Many people, for whatever reason, decide not to sing the anthem. It doesn't say that they "refused to", it just says they didn't sing it which suggests that no orders or directives have been issued saying they have to sing it.

I wouldn't sing God Save the Queen on principle because I don't believe we should have a monarchy. But then again I wouldn't accept one of the the Queen's honours so I think that would put me on strong moral ground.

However, in defence of the Welsh players (none of which sang it) I do think they were in a no win situation. If they had sung it they would have got loads of stick from sections of the Welsh public (rightly or wrongly) who are concerned about the loss of their identity and national football team, and if they didn't then they would get the stick they have on here. Ultimately I think its an inidividual's choice as to whether they sing the anthem. Plenty of English people won't at these Olympics. Daley Thompson whislted it.

Even England players dont sing the national anthem before a England game, do the press make a fuss out of that?

If I was as patriotic as Stauart Pearce is supposed to be, I would immediately strip Giggs of the captaincy. For if in the unlikely happening of Team GB winning the gold in football, I would want a person who recognised that the National Anthem is the National Anthem of GB and not the National Anthem of England. It also might be useful to remind those Welsh and Scots, that the 'songs' they purport to be their national anthems are not recognised worldwide.

Ryan Giggs is probably perfectly aware it is the national anthem of GB. It doesn't mean he has to sing it. What would you do with any other athlete who doesn't chose to sing the national anthem? Would you rather peole are forced to? The fact we don't force people to sing our national anthem is one of the things that makes me patriotic

Because as i put earlier they are in a no-win situation in regards to their own football association.

Not quite true - at the recent Euros, every single England player DID sing the national anthem before each game, because Hodgson wanted to display team unity. It was certainly the first time I had seen Rooney sing it. But other than that event, I don't recall it being mentioned in the press before if a player didn't sing.

While I consider myself to be very patriotic, I don't think it's a big issue for Giggs not to join in. Many an England before him hasn't bothered, so why should he?

Spot on M.K. - Most if not all the 'Welsh' footballers speak no Welsh and couldn't sing the Welah National Anthem to save their lives.
