Iannaconne takes over Centre as Kidd joins Barnsley

Bury have appointed Bert Iannaconne to become their new Centre of Excellence Manager on a part-time caretaker basis after Ryan Kidd accepted an offer to become Assistant Manager at Championship club Barnsley.

The UEFA 'B' Licence qualified coach has been coaching the Centre of Excellence under 15 side and has helped to further the careers of players such as Simon Whaley and the latest Shakers success story David Worrall. He'll be taking over the management of the Centre of Excellence in a part-time capacity until a permanent replacement is decided.

The switch comes after Kidd agreed to link up with former Preston North End team mate Simon Davey who this week took over as caretaker manager at Oakwell. The move continues the progression of players and staff who've gone on to a higher level after being a part of the Gigg Lane youth department.

The 35-year old took over as Centre of Excellence Manager last October when Chris Casper moved on from the position of Youth Team Manager to First Team Manager - another successful promotion for a member of youth department staff - and Chris Beech subsequently stepped up from Centre of Excellence Manager to fill that vacancy.

Over the past 13 months, Kidd has overseen a great period of success for the department, with David Worrall this week becoming Bury's second youngest first team player in a competitive fixture after being part of the Centre of Excellence under 16 squad last season. Before taking over the lead role, Kidd was a Centre of Excellence coach at the club after joining from Preston North End's youth department in the summer of 2005. The Oakwell switch represents his first coaching position within senior football.

Bury's director with responsibility for Youth and Centre of Excellence, Ross Johnson, is delighted that the Radcliffe-born coach has gone on to achieve greater heights and also believes that the move will have benefits for the Shakers, claiming:

"Bert is a tremendously experienced coach and I'm sure he'll be an excellent appointment in this role for the immediate future as he'll be eager to get stuck into the challenge."

"We will obviously miss Ryan's input, but we're confident that Chris Beech and Bert will be able to continue the good work that has already been started and we're now actively seeking another high-quality coach to take the department even further.

"As a club, we want all our players and coaches to show the ambition to want to move on to bigger and better things, so we're delighted that Ryan has been given this opportunity to prove himself at Barnsley. The only way we'll continue to punch above our weight is if the staff and players have that drive and ambition to want to achieve more from their careers.

"Ryan has been a first class appointment for the Centre of Excellence at Bury FC, and I wish him all the best in his new position.

"He's a highly talented coach who deserves this chance to showcase his talents in the Championship, and it shows how highly all the staff and players in our department are regarded by clubs at a higher level.

"We continue to act as an excellent stepping stone for anyone wishing to make it at Premiership and Championship level as players such as Colin Kazim-Richards, David Nugent and Simon Whaley have proven, while people such as Chris Casper - and now Ryan - have shown that coaching opportunities will present themselves if you enjoy success as part of our youth department staff."

Kidd says he's looking forward to the challenge of pulling Barnsley up to the right end of the Championship - even if it means leaving behind his friends at Gigg Lane. He revealed:

"Obviously it's come out of the blue as I only found out about the job when I got a call from Simon Davey at quarter to five yesterday afternoon and after learning all about the players with Simon through the night, I was straight out onto the training ground this morning to do some work with the back four ahead of tomorrow's game.

"This is too good an opportunity to turn down as I want to further my career as a coach and this is the kind of level that I want to be at, even though I'll have to say goodbye to all the people at Bury that I've really enjoyed working with. I'm very proud to see how well the youth department and first team are currently performing at Bury, and I hope people will be able to look back at the last thirteen months and appreciate the improvements and strengthening that's been achieved throughout the Centre of Excellence.

"People often knock Bury as a club when they're looking in from the outside, and it's not until you take a look from the inside that you see how hard the people are working there, and I've really enjoyed the atmosphere there which has helped me to make some friends for life.

"My position now is that I'm at Barnsley to do a job and push the club up the table. I'll be giving 110% to the role, and all it'll take is one win before we're climbing back up the league. Simon and I go back a long way after playing and coaching together at Preston, and I know that the club has secured itself an excellent manager who's got all the coaching qualifications you can think of. I'm looking forward to the challenge, and I'm sure that we can go on to enjoy some great success."

Why is Simon Davey appointing an assistant .....

.... from outside the club when he is only the caretaker manager and could be replaced by the 'new manager' after say one game?

I don't understand why someody would leave a permanent job at Bury to be an assistant to a 'Caretaker' manager for however long that lasts ....

Very odd, unless Simon Davey has been told he has the job on a permanent basis

U15s coach is a tiny tiny job, to go from that to assistant manager at a Championship side is staggering but good luck to him.

Hasn't somebody written that one of the loan players was approached

by the caretaker manager on Sunday before AR was sacked? Davey as manager all along then? Interesting. Hope it doesn't turn out Spackmanesque.
