Hi, Burnley fan here. We've been strongly linked with Ryan Shotton from Stoke and is supposedly due to sign in the next few days. As i understand he used to play for you i was wondering what you thought of him? Any good? What are his strength/weaknesses? Would you want him back? Thanks :)

Yep I would have loved him back. He is a no nonsense defender, whole hearted and gives 100%(even though he was only on loan), he will never be a cultured fotballer, but he is good at what he does and at about £1Million he is good value.

as above, tho he will miss important games thru suspensions, had a couple of red and around a dozen yellows in a season with us............tho I guess thats part of his passion, would he be the same player without it?

Quality player who I would love back at Oakwell. If you get him you're getting a top player.

Err, I think you are getting him confused with Carl Dickinson. Shotton was the cultured one, if anything a bit guilty of over-playing, wouldn't describe him as no nonsense at all.

Quality right full back, dodgy at CB, but then he is a couple of years older now, no doubting he had potential, and is definitely Championship quality.

Quality defender, gave a few goals away but put that down to lack of experience, lovely haircut.

Bares no resemblance to Malcolm Shotton. Unless he went to Jamaica on holiday and got caught short.

Did he play predominantly at right back for you then? We've already got Trippier for RB, although as some of you suggested on a Trippier thread, he could be pushed forward to right-midfield, a position we are short on.

For us, Trippier was a better right sided midfielder - pings some good crosses in.

Shotton played right back mainly as I recall and with Dickinson at left back we had (imho) one of the best back 4's in a while. Shotts played centre back but for me wasn't as dominating as a centre back should be - don't know if he's improved on that since he left us.

Whatever, 2 very very good players at this level. Gutted that they both aren't with us.

Nope keep Trippier at right back and when we play you we'll put a big player on him and murder him, exactly what you did to him at Oakwell and how you got your winner at the back stick, Trippier needs to be pushed up the field otherwise he's a waste.

    Exceptional full back

Very comfortable on the ball, handy to have when attacking a set piece, scored twice for us, one was dissalowed and the other was in a game which was abandoned, but looked menacing in the air.

Imo he was only an average centre half, seemed to miss quite a lot in the air, but it was a couple of years ago now so maybe he's matured since then.

His judgement sometimes lacked, was sent off against Watford once for a very rash tackle, and seemed to pick up a lot of yellow cards, but I suppose a bit of bite at the back could be just what you need.

He's been playing up front for Stoke from what i've been reading, that could be interesting.

On the whole I think he'd be a brilliant signing for you if you play him at right full back, unless he's improved in the air then he'd make a brilliant centre half.

I've never said i'd like him back here, because I got the feeling Mark Robins would only play him at centre half, where I thought he was wasted.

If you don't play Trippier on the right wing

Then your manager is daft. Not the best defender is Tripps but he's very quick and was the best crosser of a ball at the club for us last year, personally i'd rather have Trippier back than Shotton.

Trippier is much better in the RM slot, the best bit of him is his attacking and crossing. Him there and Shotton at RB would be very good for this division.

Shotton's a Good RB, not commanding enough for CB, but it was a few years back he might have devolped more.

Trippier is too small for me to be a defender, he's an excellent winger with a great touch, I'd have loved them back at Oakwell.

Trippier is quality going forwards but not so good defensively so his ideal position is right midfield with a good full back behind him. Would love to have both back at Oakwell.
