The EU is a flawed institution. It is very bureaucratic and soaks up lots of money. Some parts of it are not entirely accountable to the electorates of the various member states (just like the House of Lords in Britain). We spend more money on it than we receive. However, I am gutted we have voted to leave. The history of Europe has been a history of conflict which can be traced back to the Romans and beyond. The Huns, the Goths, Charlemagne, the Hundred years war, The thirty years war, Napoleonic wars, WW1, WW2 among loads of other events are all examples of European states and peoples wanting a piece of the action in some form or other. There is a lot of nationhood in Europe and a lot of pride/nationalism/xenophobia/racism which in various forms has exhibited itself over the centuries. The Origins of the EU began when the old enemies of Germany and France decided to try something new... cooperation. Out of the ashes of WW2 there was a determination to get rid of conflict and build friendship. A truly visionary idea. The ideal of that is still as relevant today as it was in the 1950's when the first moves were made for integration. But now, at a time of great instability in the world, we have voted to leave an organisation that provides stability and gives us the opportunity to sit round a table and talk. How stupid. We are no longer at the table. We will now not be able to effectively talk/influence our European neighbours on key issues in any meaningful forum. I don't particularly like David Cameron but he was correct when he said we would have our faces at the European window if we left the EU In economic terms I would be quite willing to fork out a measly £160 million a week, or whatever it is (which we probably receive back in trade income anyway) for the sake of European unity. 100+ million a week might sound a lot, and the Leave campaign doubled it to make it sound even worse but in the big scheme it's not. Wayne Rooney is ONE bloke and he earns a big chunk of that every week! We ARE turning our backs on Europe (in spite of what Boris might say), we ARE becoming bloody-minded and insular, we ARE becoming less tolerant and we ARE using others to blame for our problems when Government policy could have helped mitigate those very same problems. And when I see why some people (not all, I must confess) have voted to leave on the basis of intolerance and bigotry I do despair. Europe is heading for conflict again. We have, unfortunately for me, started the ball rolling. I just wanted to get that off my chest!!!
