SAINTS will travel more than 1,000 miles to Spain next week . . . and then play a team from England in a pre-season friendly.
Danny Lennon and his players are heading to the Costa del Sol for a warm-weather training camp and Express Sports can reveal they will play Barnsley as they step-up their preparations for the 2012/13 SPL campaign.
The English Championship outfit will be training in that part of Spain at the same time as St Mirren and Lennon is taking advantage of the opportunity to stage a friendly game.
The Scotland-versus-England clash is expected to take place on Thursday, July 12 – the day after Saints arrive in Spain.

Lennon told Express Sports: “Barnsley will be in the area at the same time as us, so we thought it would be good to play them in a game and, hopefully, everyone can get a 45-minute runout.
“It’s important for the players to get a game to stretch their legs and shake out any rustiness.”
Express Sports also understands that Lennon hopes to arrange an additional friendly match on Saturday, July 14, but the opposition has yet to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, the Buddies boss said he has been encouraged by what he’s seen from his players during their first full week back at work.
Double sessions have been the order of the day at the club’s Ralston training HQ and Lennon is pleased with how the players are shaping up.
He said: “They’ve been great and have done everything asked of them. Before they broke up for summer, we asked them to come back in good shape and they are really looking the part.
“Now it’s a case of stepping up things a level but, so far, the preparations have been spot on.”

It's pretty much Rochdale vs. Cowdenbeath, not Barnsley vs. Saint Mirren!

At least it will give us something to talk about in work, with a couple of their fans.
