bought a sat nav today sony nv-u82 the software version is up to date but the maps arn't, my house/post code which is about 18 months old isn't on it i have been on the sony website to uodate maps and it asked for £42. there was a link asking to activate product, but said vista wan't supported so didn't want to do that until i can get acces to a xp computer. is this normal to pay for all updates or should i be able to update first time for free seems daft buying a product out of date and having to pay extra to update tia
I have a Sat Nav, and yes you have to pay for updates.
I think you will find most loaded maps are behind the times a little, annoying as it is. It's impossible to be bang up to date depending on how often they are updated, or how long the product has been in the box. I have updated mine once and took advantage of a half price offer, so I paid £30.
WhatI find annoying is that there is a road not far from me that is well used andlinks two villages in the area, that still isn't on the latest update. And it's been there probably more than a hundred years!
Having said that, am very satisfied wi mine.

No mate, you have to pay to update maps, personally i'd go back to where you got it and explain the sitution! You never know they might update it for you! You don't ask you dont get.
there's lots of roads like that one in Darfield off Pinfold Lane that apparently isn't on, for some reason the Chron linked that to the council not repairing it ie. "we're not even on Sat-Nav" I doubt BMBC use a Tomtom to plan their roadworks
i have no argument with paying for future map updates. i just feel when you itst buy it it should have the latest maps, bought the bleeding thing from argos as well, exluded from 30 day money back unless faulty
1) I am sure if you returned the unit saying that you were not satisfied the content was up to date you might get a refund. But, if you do,
2) Forget about having a Sat Nav. You will not find one that is bang up to date.
3) Why are you worried that your house isn't on it? You can find your way to your house surely. You will find it absolutely invaluable for getting you through complicated city centres and plotting a route to a destination you aren't familiar with. That's what a Sat Nav is really for.

my house for the strting point, the date of the product is 2007, theres a new version of it out for £20 more. just think if pay £150 it should be upto date to begin with, then its upto me if i ever update it again
If ... you have bought the product new and it hasn't got the latest maps, then I would say you have a case for returning the unit to the retailer.
What you need to establish is, is the map you have the latest available. With Tom Tom you can plug into the Net, register your machine and it will scan the software and tell you if it's the latest available, or whether it needs an update. Dunno if you can do this with yours.
