Saturdays on Radio Two not going to be the same anymore

Have developed a little ritual over the years. Sounds of the Sixties with Brian Mathew between 8 and 10am then, if travelling to a match, listen to Pick of the Pops before switching to Football Heaven on RS. Now that Tony Blackburn has been sacked I suppose that programme will get dropped. No one else would do it the same anyway.

Always liked Tony Blackburn, but then I'm of an age to remember him kicking off Radio One with "Flowers in the Rain" by The Move. Used to deliver papers listening to his breakfast show on my "tranny". His jokes were as bad then as they are now, but it was part of the fabric of radio listening.

Proper broadcasters, not like some of the idiots around now, such as Graham Norton. The radio goes OFF when that berk comes on!

 

The 60's was a decade, ie 10 years. That boring fcker's been on at 8am playing 'songs' from that decade for well more than 10 years. Something's not quite right.

 

Yup the 60s a very poor decade for music. I'm listening to Brian Matthews atm and still waiting for a decent tune to come on.

BTW is Tony taking Arnold with him? Woof Woof,"Down Arnold"

 

I really like Tony Blackburn too although I haven't heard his show for a while now. He used to do a Sunday afternoon show on a commercial radio station playing records from his personal collection. Arnold evokes great memories from my younger years.

Oh I can't agree with that! Homeward Bound has just been on. Classic Simon and Garfunkel.

He does play some obscure stuff that I've never heard of but it is a very good show to listen to. I like the information that he slots in between most tracks. Stuff you never knew about the singers or the writers. Good progamme for me, always has been

 

Like a pair of comfortable shoes. Not the best but missed when gone.

 

It depends on the two years he selects I suppose. It's always the top twenty run down, from two different decades usually - sometimes really good stuff, sometimes not. He's good to listen to though, whatever he is playing.

I suppose it's a bit like the passing of Terry Wogan and his like. Another brick removed from your own personal wall of life memories. Before too long you're exposed, like Pink

Hmm well we will just have to agree to disagree on that one. All opinions of course.

 

Brian Matthews should be knighted. As mentioned earlier, it's not just the music, but all the detail and background minutiae that he adds that make the show. Great broadcaster.

From the trail I heard this morning, it sounds like the Blackburn slot continues, for today at least, with perennial benchwarmer Mark Goodier at the helm.

It's funny when people say this decade or that decade was "shocking for music". Obviously what is a classic to one person is wallpaper music or complete dross to another. There was some terrible stuff in the sixties, I agree, but then there was some fantastic stuff that will be played for ever more, somewhere or other. That's why some of the performers from that time are still around and still touring. Some might argue it's time they stopped, but I wouldn't say that.

You could say the same for the seventies. Some will think it was all disco music played by groups that all looked the same - sparkly costumes and big afro hair styles. Then again there is a track like Baker Street from Gerry Rafferty. My favourite record of all time.

We can't all like the same but I have a very wide taste in music. Smack my bitch up doesn't feature in my collection though.......

 

I agree with that sentiment - it's amazing that he has never had that honour. Maybe he upset the establishment somewhere along the line. Top, top broadcaster though and there will never be another like him. His voice just takes me back to my teens every time I hear it.

Glad to hear Pick of the Pops is still going ahead today. I will miss it when it is gone.

Oh God....Norton is just about to start. Reaching for the off switch RIGHT NOW!!!!!!

 

And here was me thinking everyone had that classic in their collection.

 

When I listen to music radio these days I tend to stear towards stations like Smooth and Hallam 2 because they do play a lot of '60s, '70s and early '80s but even these stations play some ***** - modern R&B and recent chart crap. Since Smooth 70's was closed down its hard to find a station that doesn't play the kind of music that makes my ears bleed.

 

A few years ago I used to frequent the Isle of Wight Festival - went to several including the one when the Rolling Stones headlined. Never been a fan of theirs but that stage show was top drawer from first minute to last.

Prodigy were the Friday Night Headliners one year - 2004 or 2005-ish - and I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and stay on to watch them. Good grief.....what a bad decision that was. I had given Faithless the same chance, possibly the year before, and I actually enjoyed listening to them (well, mostly). Insomnia - great track!

But Prodigy were something else entirely. It was perhaps two or three songs into their set when they launched into Smack my bitch up, and that was time to say goodnight. The rest of my family party had already gone back to the house (next to the festival site) apart from my young nephew Thomas. He loved it. I left him to it.....

 

TBH I've never heard of it. I've no Prodigy albums in my collection and no intention of changing that anytime soon.

My own listening preferences is more to the heavier side.

 

Pick of the Pops will not be the same without Tony. He added such a lot when he took over from Dale Winton(???!!!???!!!). He appears to have been stitched up but I am sure we have not heard the last of him. I am sure he will be back on commercial radio. I said Mark Goodier would be taking over from him to the current Mrs Didcot Red only yesterday. Good luck to him, but after writing to my local MP defending the BBC from the government's plans to clip its wings, I almost feel like taking it back.
