As the final part of my PGCE I'll probably end up in a Barnsley high school.

Which are the best and worst schools in tarn?

    Darton
    Foulstone

Then its a bit of a mish mash

All are well below national average except penistone which is close.

Look at the league tables.....thats what they are there for

All in all, Barnsley schools are average or below average when compared to other areas of South Yorkshire and well below average when you start comparing them to national figures
What chance has Barnsley got with an uneducated workforce? :S

RE:Why do you want the best Schools?

    Where's yer bottle?
Take it from me mate you will need to experience all types of pupil.
If you only want to teach at the best Schools, and I dont for one minute believe that one School is better than another, only that they have the more able students, you are not going to get a slice of reality.

If you can cope with teaching low ability students you will be able to teach anywhere.
Don't try and go for the soft option.

    Try Wombwell High.
At least you will be able to drown your sorrows at the end of the day with a decent pint of real ale in Wetherspoon's.

Agree. The best teachers should be wanting to work in the worst schools.

If they have confidence in their own ability.

Why make life hard for yourself

    Harder job for same money.

I'm not some saintly figure out to correct mankinds wrongs.
I enjoy teaching and do the best for the pupils under my care, but get real for a minute.
Given the choice, which as a teacher of a shortage subject I may get, of course I'll select a place of work where I beleive I will enjoy my job the most.

PS, league table are not an accurate tool for labelling a school.
    Look at value added scores

You folks who know Penistone School.

My daughter will probably go there next year. Her friend is a first year and is being bullied, knocked to the ground this week. Is this a known problem at Penistone? How do the staff view it? Any suggestions to help my daughter's pal?

    Bullying happens at all schools

however, the teachers won't accept that it does.

Chris had the choice of going to Penistone but chose not to when all the bullies from his primary school opted to go there. As far as we are aware, none of these said bullies finished the 5 years as they were all expelled and sent to "Special Centres" to finish their education!

A lot of bullying goes on on the buses to Penistone, I have heard of incidents when the driver has had to stop the bus and intervene as groups of "children" have tried throwing others off the bus.

    Already have with mine mate.

Hopefully she'll be able to put it into practice. Her mate doesn't seem to have it in her.
