The first home game of the season. I know a lot has changed since then, but we've not lost at this level at home in our last 26 games. Chesterfield were the last league one victor's at Oakwell in April 2016. Our home record last season was abysmal, and yet somehow better than our away record. 3 straight home defeats to end the season came after 6 unbeaten at home (3 wins, 3 draws) amidst the mini revival under the Bassi Quina period. Of course, that's irrelevant now and what matters is that Michael Duff gets his first win as Barnsley coach. In his pre match presser, Duff has said he knows Cheltenham's players better than his own, which is not only understandable, but very helpful. He alluded to the relentless nature of their strikers, May and N'Lundulu. The latter he says is an unknown quantity, having featured just 4 times last season due to injury. Alfie May however has been the subject to much interest from Barnsley's fans throughout the summer. Personally, I don't think a 29 year old with one prolific season to his name is the long term solution to our own problems, but I can certainly see the appeal. His goal at Peterborough last weekend was his 39th in a Cheltenham shirt, equalling the club record for football league goals (tied with Julian Alsop). In a recent interview with a local journalist, May cites Duff's belief in him as one of the main factors behind his best goalscoring season. One familiar face in the Cheltenham line up, is likely to be Ben Williams. He featured 11 times last season, although appeared to be out of the side for the last month or so (presumably injured?). I liked Ben, although I thought he was much more comfortable as a traditional full back, as opposed to a wing back. Defensively I always thought he was very strong, but often got caught out when pushing higher up the pitch. Head to head. This will only be the 3rd meeting between us and Cheltenham. Both Tony Naylor and Bruce Dyer scored in the first two meetings. A draw at Oakwell followed a 3-1 reds victory at Whaddon Road. The bookies have us priced at 4/5 for victory which I think represents good value. I fancy us to edge this one, based solely on Cheltenham not being particularly good travellers. I'm going for 2-1 with Styles and Norwood on the scoresheet.
A couple of interesting extra facts: Cheltenham have conceded at least 2 goals in 8 of their last 9 matches (League One). Cheltenham have failed to win 13 of their last 14 away matches (League One). Difficult game to call - I don't think we're confident enough to win and I think they'll be goals so I'm plumping for 2-2.
Going off the stats alone 3 nil Cheltenham. They'll annihilate us. You know we'll let their run come to an end. Although a one nil win to the reds will do me.
