Originally scheduled to take place when we were on a run of 12 unbeaten, we now face Ipswich amidst a 16 game unbeaten run of their own (won 12, drawn 4). And despite 9 straight home victories, and 1 defeat from the last 15, the bookies have us as 12/5 outsiders to put a spanner in Ipswich's automatic promotion hopes. Ipswich come to Oakwell with the best away record in the division. They've amassed 40 points so far, and are on a run of 7 unbeaten on their travels (4 wins, 3 draws). Despite their incredible run, they have only won a quarter of their last 12 away games in all competitions (4 wins, 5 draws and 3 defeats), although it is against the better sides where they've seemingly stepped up their game and got the win. I'm recent weeks, they've won away at Peterborough, Derby and Bolton, and earlier in the season they drew at Hillsborough. Our record against Ipswich in the 21st century isn't favourable, we've won 4, drawn 8 and lost 10 in the league to the tractor boys, not including the play off final defeat in 2000. Of those 4 victories, 3 have come at Oakwell. Our record at Oakwell this century is slightly more respectable, 3 wins, 3 draws and 4 defeats. Our last victory over Ipswich however was over 12 years and 13 meetings ago, and our last victory at Oakwell over the tractor boys came the season before courtesy of a stoppage time Jon Macken winner, to move the reds away from the Championship drop zone and push Ipswich to the foot of the table. As mentioned elsewhere, the referee selected for this game is Blackpool favourite Ben Toner. His yellow card count this season is relatively low, averaging just over 3 yellows a game and a red card every 11.66 games. That being said, all of his 3 red cards this season have come in his last 10 games. His only other Barnsley league appointment was the 0-1 away victory over Walsall where Jacob Brown scored a last gasp winner. A game notable for Walsall controversially having a goal disallowed. I'm finding this one difficult to call, as both ourselves and Ipswich have upped our game against the stronger sides in the division in recent weeks. Buoyed by a large crowd under the Oakwell lights, I'm going for 3-2 Barnsley, with Tedic, Phillips and Andersen putting us 3 ahead before a Chaplin and Ladapo goal sets up a nervy finale in the 2nd half. You reds!!
Another great read, i'm going for an home win they have to loose, an its gunner be to us 5 - 0, C,O,Y,R.
Way I look at an unbeaten run is that every game is one nearer the inevitable defeat. Trouble is on this occasion it applies to both teams so the obvious conclusion is a draw. Having said that my glass is eternally empty. So 2-0 Ipswich. Chaplin to score and rub our noses in it.
Only certainty is that Chaplin will score. It won’t matter though because it will be a late consolation goal in reply to our 3-0 lead.
Been past Oakwell today. BT were there, installing EFL hotline in away dugout. Smart blue telephone on a little shelf.
1-2. Welsh lad 1 asst by Welsh lad 2. Then vice versa. Jamaican lad runs on in full reggae Boyz kit and dances in front of Ponte end at full time....
On the international players point clearly not going to get to the bottom of it all. Assuming it was a genuine mistake by EFL or Ipswich and was noticed too late to get the game back on logistically why can't the mistake be rectified by not letting those players play this time round? They couldn't play originally, someone messed up, they shouldht be able to play now? Or am I being too logical here?
It was not a mistake by Ipswich! Calculated move on their part. You can absolutely guarantee that if we'd been in poor form and languishing mid-table, they'd have had no problems finding a team to bring to Oakwell....
I recall them scoring a late consolation in reply to our 3-0 lead before. Trouble is, they scored another two as well!
