Week 2 of the March marathon of games commences with the return game against Lincoln City. Despite their good defence and slightly lacklustre attack, we played out a 2-2 draw with the Imps at Sincil Bank before Christmas. The bookies have us as 10/11 favourites to get back to winning ways at home, with the visitors currently priced at quite a long 3/1, given their recent good run of form. The Imps currently are unbeaten in 4 away from home, a run which ended a stretch of no wins in 4 at the back end of last year. In that time, they've beaten strugglers Port Vale and Burton, and drawn with Wycombe and Charlton. As has been mentioned elsewhere, Lincoln, like at home last season, tend to beat the teams at the bottom, draw with teams in mid-table, and lose to the sides towards the top, away from home. Their overall unbeaten run is currently longer than ours, as they're 10 undefeated, including draws at home to Peterborough and Derby. A haul of 20 points from the last 30 is very impressive, putting them 3rd in the form table behind ourselves and Portsmouth. At Oakwell, our record this century consists of 2 defeats last season, one in the cup and one in the league. Our last league victory over Lincoln at Oakwell was by 4 goals to 1 in April 1973, though we have played them just 3 times in the league at home since. The first 22 meetings at Oakwell between the two sides largely resulted in a home victory, with 16 home wins, 5 stalemates and just 1 Lincoln victory, though all of these games were played before 1957. Our record since then vs Lincoln on home soil reads, 5 wins, 2 draws and 8 defeats. Only Portsmouth have conceded fewer league goals this season than Lincoln. They have a settled back 3 of Paudie O'connor, Sean Roughan and Alex Mitchell, ahead of dependable keeper, Lukas Jensen. It's worth noting that the back 3 had 3 red cards between them this season so far, so often can be prone to a lack of disclipline. Lincoln have had 5 red cards in total. It's going forward where Lincoln have often struggled this season. In the top 17, only Exeter have scored fewer goals than the Imps, who in turn have scored 26 fewer than us. Their top scorer is Reeco Fairchild-Henry, a tricky wide player, with 6 goals. He's netted the same as Adam Phillips, and fewer goals than Herbie Kane, Jon McAtee and Devante Cole. I am a fan of Danish midfielder Lasse Sorensen who, in the last 12 months, has really kicked on to become one of the best players in league 1; a tireless midfielder who grabs the game by the scruff of the neck. Referee Ben Atkinson has issued 115 yellows and 7 reds in 24 games this season, making him just above average. He took charge of Lincoln's 2-0 home win over Cheltenham in September carding 4 Imps players including ex Red, Adam Jackson. As this is his first season in the football league, he's never taken charge of a Barnsley game. For me, this looks stickier than the Bolton fixture. Lincoln like to keep it tight at the back, which is something we often struggle to deal with. I fear too that the Bolton game took a lot out of us, as for me, Phillips and Cole in particular looked leggy. With the games coming thick and fast, I can see a couple of players being rotated either here, or at Carlisle on Tuesday. I'm going to remain optimistic however, and plump for a 1-0 home victory, with Cosgrove finally breaking Lincoln's resistance in the final 15.
Good write up again @Archey it is much appreciated. As for the prediction, with their low scoring nature (not me putting the kiss of death on it) I’m hoping for an overdue clean sheet. 2-0 to us. Cole and Phillips.
Comfortable 2-0 win a bit too dull. Everyone needs a boost after Tuesday, a bit of a tonic, so I'll go for an incredibly late 2-1 win. We trail from the 32nd minute, Kane levels in the 74th, then after a massive scramble, Pines gets his 3rd in 3 games in stoppage time. Oakwell goes bat$hit mental and we all head off home with a spring in our step. I'm not asking for much.
I’m finding this hard to call and think it’s going to be a really difficult game for us. Apparently Lincoln don’t score or concede many and are in good form, I can see a 2-1 win either way or a 1-1 draw with Cole scoring
Hope we've lost the habit of conceding early at home, if we can get the first goal I'm going for a 3-0 win.
Our old player Adam Jackson normally has a stormer against us but hopefully not enough to stop us winning 2-0
