Back to Oakwell, where we're on a run of 8 straight victories, and 13 from 14 in all competitions. The bookies have us at 8/11 to make that 9 straight home wins. 16 of the 26 goals we've scored across those 8 consecutive victories have come in the first half. Oxford, along with MK Dons, have arguably been the biggest underachievers this season in League 1. Tipped to kick on from their 8th place finish last season, United are currently battling it out with their rivals Cambridge to retain their league 1 status. They've actually accumulated 1 more point away than they have at home, albeit they have the 18th best away record in the division and just 21 points. They are winless in 8 away from the Kassam Stadium, and have just a smash and grab victory over Fleetwood as their only win in 13 on their travels. That being said, they have drawn their last 3 away games, including a credible point at in form Peterborough, where they withstood quite dominant Posh possession. Our 4-0 victory to kick off the 18/19 season, is our only home tie vs Oxford this century. Oxford have only ever won once at Oakwell, a 1-0 victory which will be 30 years ago to the day, on Monday. We've won 9 and drawn 2 of the other 11 meetings. Referee Ross Joyce has averaged less than 4 yellow cards per game in his 26 appointments this season. He's issued a red card every 5.2 games, including to Max Watters in our 2-0 home win over Cambridge. He also took charge of our recent victory over Wensdah, a game in which he issued 8 yellow cards. This will be the 9th time he has refereed a Barnsley game, we've won 7 and drew the other 1 when he has previously taken charge, including the aforementioned 4-0 victory over Oxford in 18/19. He's a very experienced referee in the lower leagues and hopefully he won't be given any big decisions to make. I can't see past our home form for this one. We usually set off well at home and have the game sewn up early doors. I'm going for 3-0 with Tedic, Kane and Andersen on the scoresheet.
Oxford fighting for their lives will make it difficult but I think we’ll be hurting from the Lincoln game which will spurr us on to be too much for them. 3-1 us
Why won't we put the effort in? I get some of the results of late (away) haven't been great, but I don't ever think a lack of effort has been the issue.
I spoke to Ross Joyce a few days after the Massives game - he's the Head of Referee development for the North Riding FA up here. I mentioned to him that we all thought he was a **** after sending Watters off - until we saw the video!. And that after the Wednesday game......we all thought he was great!! Decent bloke - though I hope i don't come to regret saying that after Saturday.
