Game number 3 of 4 during the Christmas period is arguably the toughest. We visit a Peterborough side currently occupying the second automatic promotion place. Posh are 3rd in the 5 game form table, behind Derby and ourselves, and despite a disappointing draw vs Reading on boxing day, are now unbeaten in 7 in the league. Because of their strong form, particularly at home, Peterborough are 7/11 favourites to take all 3 points. Despite having the second best away record (behind Portsmouth on goal difference), the reds are priced at 4/1 to extend our away win streak to 3. At the Weston Homes Stadium, Peterborough have lost just once in all competitions this season (11 wins 5 draws). Their only defeat was a mad game vs Derby, where the visitors scored 4 goals in 16 minutes before half time, and then seemingly sat back waiting to counter. Their only other home game against a current top 6 side was a 3-0 victory over Oxford earlier this month. Earlier in the year, Peterborough's home form was much patchier, which contributed to them needing a final day victory to secure a play off place, with heavy home defeats to Bolton, Ipswich, Wycombe and Cheltenham since the start of the year. So when Peterborough lose at home, they tend to lose heavily, suggesting the crowd might turn if they don't come out of the blocks on fire. Our record at Peterborough this century is largely favourable; the reds have won 9, drawn 1 and lost 3 at London Road since the year 2000. We're unbeaten in our last 4 visits to the Posh, scoring 8 and conceding just once. Historically however, our record is less favourable. We lost our first 6 visits to Peterborough between 1964 and 1974, and didn't record a single league victory away at Peterborough until 2002, courtesy of a Mike Sheron brace and Bruce Dyer goal in a 3-1 victory. The referee for this one is Adam Herczeg. There's a thread about him on the BBS which is never a good sign. Like the ref from boxing day, he has a low card output this season, averaging just 3 cards per game across his 19 fixtures. He has issued just 1 red, and that was to a Liverpool u21 player in their 4-0 defeat at Valley Parade in the LDV Vans trophy. He took charge of 2 games last season involving the reds; our 3-1 home victory over Charlton and our 2-1 defeat away at Burton, where he managed to miss a blatant goal line handball for the hosts. It was on the journey back from Burton that I decided to start previewing referee's in this thread, and subsequently start the ref watch thread. So Mr Herczeg is the inspiration for the Comparatively competent/golden kettle awards. He's never taken charge of a Peterborough game. Here's a thread about him. https://barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/adam-herczeg.320791/ Arguably, this is the toughest test so far. Though it's often forgotten that we're in good form ourselves; we can match Peterborough's 1 defeat in 7 with a record of 1 defeat in 12 ourselves. Peterborough have a tendency to bottle the big games if they go behind, whereas it's imperative for us to score first. It's a difficult game to call, but I'm going for a 2-2 draw, with McAtee and Cole getting the goals for us.
Great preview, thanks! A draw would be a great result given our record against the top sides. If we manage to win I think we’ll start to steamroller sides in the new year with the confidence it’d bring.
2-1 Peterborough. Really good side this season who are going a bit unnoticed despite being second. All the hype seems to be around Pompey, Bolton and Derby. We’re a good side as well but we’ve got a lot to do between now and end of the season. We need a good January and I’m sure we’ll be in and around where we need to be but at the moment we aren’t on level with a couple of sides, Peterborough one of them. Before anyone comes back at me with our current form, which is brilliant, we’ve got beaten by Pompey, Oxford and Derby. Stevenage was a great performance on Saturday but they’re not in Peterborough’s bracket either.
We need to start on the front foot and attack straight from the KO if we are to get anything from this game imho. Posh are very much an attacking outfit, but if we can stun them early with a goal or 2 then we can deffo get something from this game. I’m not confident of a clean sheet especially looking at the goals we’ve conceded lately and the near misses. Going for a 2-2 draw.
Be surprised if they fail to score a minimum of 3 we can’t keep a clean Sheet & they’ll exploit us in wide positions. 3-1
Always confident of a win going there and nothing changes this season. It won’t be a big win but I predict 2-1 or another 3-2.
Pivotal game for me. Fixtures like this are the difference between being a playoff side and an automatic promotion contender. If we lose a top two slot starts to look quite a long way off, whereas a win would catapult us right into the mix. It's an extremely difficult one to call, but with both teams in such good form, a draw would seem likely. I'm going for 1-1, although a decisive result either way wouldn't be any sort of surprise.
