Happy new year BBS'ers Wigan Athletic next, a side who are 18th but would be 9th without their points deduction. They've gained just 12 points from their 12 away games, which is the 14th best away record in the league. Despite our relatively poor home form, we've garnered 17 points from 11 home games, albeit this makes us only the 16th best home side. Despite that, the bookies have us as 4/7 favourites, with Wigan as 5/1 outsiders. On their travels, Wigan are without a win in 4 in the league, dropping points at 4 sides below them in the table in that sequence. Further compounding their away form is the fact that they've only won 1 of their last 9 away in the league (vs Exeter), and just 3 times all season. That being said, their other two league victories away from home came at Bolton and Derby, albeit both of those were back in August. Our home form against Wigan is abysmal. We've never beaten Wigan at home in the league. Our only ever victory at Oakwell vs the Latics came in an FA Cup tie in 1954. A first league encounter in 1978 ended goalless, and a league cup tie in 1990 saw the Latics run out 1-0 winners. Our next 3 meetings, which all occurred this century, saw Wigan run out comfortable winners, though the last two Oakwell meetings have ended goalless. The last Barnsley player to score at Oakwell against Wigan was Kevin Betsy, in a game where reds favourite Andy Liddell, opened the scoring for the visitors. The referee for this game is Seb Stockbridge. He actually officiated the reverse fixture, where he sent off Latics centre half Charlie Hughes. He's issued 108 yellows and just that 1 red card in 20 games so far this season. He got largely negative reviews from the BBS earlier in the season, and was the ref who sent Mads Andersen off vs Bolton at Oakwell last season. A thread about him here. https://barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/ref-watch-seb-stockbridge.324518/ Given that we appear to be on the up, and that Wigan's form reads 1 win in 5 in the league, I fancy us to finally get that first league win at home over the latics. McAtee is on fire, and Connell gives us that layer of cover that we missed earlier in the campaign. Wigan won't sit back, which will play into our hands, and therefore I'm going for 2-0 reds, with McAtee and Phillips getting the goals.
With the way we're playing at the minute, someone's due an absolute shoeing as long as we manage to play across both halves. I really hope it's Wigan. 5-1 to us, happy New Year.
I've changed it to home now, but I'm still not 100% sure what I was going for. I was drunk when I wrote it.
5, nowt weve gorra get the new year off wi a bang, Av a great new year everyone, keep the faith, C,O,Y,R.
