Does the operator have to have comformation from the BBC website, or somewhere else, before he puts the correct score up? Or does he have to change the bulbs around?
Pastime in dull games How will the scores of different games be shown ? I like the ever so sneaky morphing of one teams name into another so you haven't a fckin clue what's going on - builds the suspense of finding out the Walsall v Colchester score brilliantly.
He probably has to change the bulbs around! Several bulbs have been faulty since last season, and the scoreboard looks tatty and shabby. Is it asking too much for the replacement of bulbs?
This makes me feel old ...... ... But back in 1986 ish I worked at the club for a couple of years. The only way for the club to get the half time scores in those days,(other than to wait patiently for them to come on the radio), was to ring a central number in Leeds. I used to nip off just before half time with my pen and piece of paper, ring them up, write down the scores, and take them to the announcer. It was before teletext, mobiles and all that .... Now folks know the scores before the scoreboard operator put 'em up.
Re: This makes me feel old ...... Old scoreboard with letters and numbers that corresponded with games printed in programme. Got half times halfway through second half.
Re: This makes me feel old ...... scoreboard replaement parts discontinued, need sponsorship for new soreboard.Don rowing was looking into new BIG tv one, initial cost high end
Re: This makes me feel old ...... Maybe I could use my vast experience in scoreboard design to help out????
Re: This makes me feel old ...... Good idea.... Simple job I hear.... Just make sure you use parts that aren't defunct by next Christmas.
Re: This makes me feel old ...... I will be defunct myself by next Christmas anyway so I couldn't give a toss. Quite fancy the challenge of designing a new BFC scoreboard though. I wonder what it would need to do? Obviously it would need to be able to show slow motion replays of Matty Done's superb finish the other night so we can all confirm that he was miles ONSIDE! It would need to be able to display birthday messages, sponsor adverts, latest scores from other matches, pictures of ice packs being applied to Jacob Butterfield's knee and close up slow motion replays of Craig Davies hitting the crossbar. Personally, I've always wondered what the point is of a scoreboard at football. I can't remember ever going to a football match and "forgetting" what the score was! Cricket is, of course, very different. Imagine a game of cricket without a scoreboard.........
Re: This makes me feel old ...... Good point! If I designed one, it would mysteriously break down when we were losing, only to spring to life again when we equalised. I've not thought about what it would do if we went into the lead after falling behind. Can't imagine there would be much need for such a feature.
Re: This makes me feel old ...... Maybe I should design a bulb instead of an entire scoreboard? Edison did that once and they got used in lighthouses. Ask Rosemary!
Re: This makes me feel old ...... Wouldn't mind them going back to that, be better for if you were avoiding scores for Match of the Day! Why don't we buy a 2nd hand scoreboard? I was reading in When Saturday Comes about the trade in stuff replaced at other clubs. For example, Stoke replaced their scoreboards with video screens and the old one was bought by a L2 club.
Re: This makes me feel old ...... Sheffield United bought theirs second hand. Mark Stokes says a new one would cost 150k and they're looking into the economics of it, l have a feeling we'll have a new one by the end of the season.
