Can anyone please enlighten me on where the consistently best secondary schools are in and around the Barnsley area please?

Not necessarily just based on Ofsted ratings but the general performance of the school, reputation etc.

    Not including private schools.

Any explanation, reasoning would be helpful.

    Thanks.

Perhaps I'm biased but Penistone Grammar is very highly rated. Constantly performing well at both GCSE and A level.

I'm not a massive expert but I'd definitely recommend Penistone Grammar. One of my best mates is Assistant Head and my cousin is Head of Ethics and Philosophy. Without any note of bias whatsoever, I can hand on heart say they're two of the finest people you could imagine, and completely committed to the profession despite all its trials and tribulations. Plus John Stones went there. I think the fact that he still regularly comes back to see his old teachers and do presentations to the kids speaks volumes about the school (as well as about what a good lad John is, of course!)

Penistone tops the Ofsted charts but it won't be long before you'll not be able to get your.kid in if you don't live in Penistone. They're building a massive housing estate just up the road from the school and once these kids are of secondary school age they'll get priority over kids from the outskirts like Silkstone Common.

Honestly, I think schools are much of a muchness nowadays For me, if your child goes where they choose and has a good set of mates around them they'll do ok.

What if they're thick as mince? :)

Joking apart though, I agree Helen that schools in general are kinder/better run than they were 30 years ago. And I also agree that the kid being happy where they're going and having friends is massive

No. Actually, I think my mate is assistant deputy head. Jose Garcia, just started in the role recently. Absolutely brilliant bloke.

We moved to Penistone because of the school. He’s not there yet so can’t comment, but people speak highly of it. I’m led to believe it’s pretty strict though, which has caused a few problems.

On a separate note, no idea why it’s still called a Grammar School, cos it’s not one. Local Tories I imagine…

Tbf, the help is there even for the " thick as mince". And everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses.

Not uncommon for schools to keep the "grammar" name even though they're no longer selective.

Yeah. Weird though innit? Can only be snobbery really. I sent a letter last year recommending a name change to Penistone High School. Never heard back.

Ah no worries mate, I only know Ian because my 5 year old plays football with his lad at Holmfirth Town juniors but he seems like a top fella.

The nomenclature of schools is quite confusing and generally unhelpful. My daughter attends a selective grammar school, but until very recently it was always called "Kesteven and Sleaford High School for Girls". They only recently changed their name to "Selective Academy", which I think sounds bloody awful.

I know that they take recruiting exceptional staff extremely seriously there.
