Who would you have fancied playing in the play offs? The team that played us off the park the other day or one of the teams that played us off the park home and away this season? We're not in the relegation battle that we were in a couple of months ago, so let's see if we can build on this next season. We'll be letting half a dozen players go this summer, including our highest paid player, and hopefully we can start recruitment a bit earlier, so we can build a big enough squad as not to rely on loan players, because some of the ones we have had this season have been far worse than our own Academy players that can't get a kick. But I really don't think we'd have done much in the play offs this season anyway, because the other three teams have the beating of us. We'll be losing three decent teams from our division and I don't think we'd have anything to fear from the ones coming down. The ones coming up shouldn't make any great shakes either, so there should be 3 or 4 top six spots up for the taking (presuming that whoever doesn't go up from Swindon, MK Dons, Preston and Sheff Utd will be up there). But lets start building for next season as soon as possible. No point whatsoever in playing Stewart or John, for example, unless we're looking at making their signings permanent ones.
We're losing our highest plaid player? Who's that? Cranie? Curious to know. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'd like to play the team that gets us on Sky Sports twice at the very minimum and ensures we have a little extra cash for yet another off-season clear out.
Agree with much of your post, especially this. I suspect we'll be signing Jabo, otherwise I'd do likewise with him, try some of our own players. Berry in the middle for example.
Both for me, plus Jennings if there's a daft enough manager to take him. We could get three or four Scowen/Winnall/Hourihane types for that surely. I'd really like to see us chance our arm a bit, see if JOS and Ryan Williams are gettable. And play our own kids (Bree, Smith et al) before borrowing ones who are no better from other clubs.
I understand that Crainie is the highest paid player and he is out of contract this summer. I can't imagine we'd be prepared to meet his wage expectations for a new contract, and I can't imagine he'd be prepared to drop down to what we would pay. I would expect that some team in the Championship or League One will be prepared to take him on though, particularly as he wouldn't cost a transfer fee. Therefore I expect him to leave, which would hopefully have the positive of freeing up money for a couple of players at the very least.
It was a stress fracture of the spine. Even if he's recovered from that, I can't imagine we're going to risk him again this season. Hope not anyway. Wilson rested him from the first team, told the board that at such a young age he couldn't play every week and we risked his future if we did. So we played him in the academy and youth cup teams where he suffered the injury. Genius.
We've certainly had a few players on loan this season that have made me scratch my head and wonder who they are listening to when it comes to recruitment. Kiwomya was far worse than Danny Rose, who we let go. Declan John, after seeing him a couple of times, is not as good a defender as Smith and I am yet to see anything from Stewart to say he's better than any of the kids who can't get a game. And was Trotta this season too? He was woeful.
And, in central midfield the night he last played, away at Bradford int youth cup, up against a reight unit who introduced himself in an aerial challenge within 2 minutes. Our efforts to look after some of our talented kids are very questionable. Digby, Jennings and of course Bree.
John, Stewart, Dudgeon and Trotta all came with a certain pedigree too that would make you think we've dropped right on. not so it seems! and some folk on here over react if there is no sugar for the tea so its not unexpected
I agree, hence my call for signing a RB and LB. Holgate is starting to look jaded and he has perhaps been overplayed for his age
Or perhaps even. We no longer have decent effective wingers again making our full backs overrun... again.
Yep. A combination I would say. Too many weak links in our first team squad right now. Not a dig at the management now or earlier, but I can't honestly say what our best starting line up is right now. John looked dodgy but only real chance came when Lalcovic covered and did an impression of a corner flag. Holgate Left one on one far too much second half while centre halfs did well to give so much space to their forwards, repeatedly. If we aren't going to attack wide, as per yesterday I would prefer Berry to Lalkovic who looked a liability rather than threat. Our chances mainly second half came through the middle from Winnall and Pearson.
