After 40 years working, I took retirement, got bored after a couple of years, and decided to go into self employment. In September I sent in my downloaded application for an Activation Code. One never arrived, so at the beginning of this month when Ms Stewart started chelping about filing on line, I repeated the execise, and still haven't received one. Today I have spent an hour on the 'phone to various people and been told that the probable reason an Activation Code hasn't been issued, is because they do not recognise my NI Number, and number that was allocated to me when I was born!

When the deadline passes tomorrow I shall be liable for a fine for failing to submit my self assessment. Is it any surprise that the country is in such a fiscal mess?

I've just asked the same question to the Inland Revenue. If you have asked for an activation code but haven't received it, the deadline moves to the 15th of February.

ive been self employed since 17.
    done my returns every year.
in 08 went on the books let tax man know. 2 years on books. im now back self employed and received a tax bill for £10,000 for the years i was on books.
the tax system in this country is diabolicle. also there trying to claim all penaltys. its about time we all stood up to the mess that is called the inland revenue.

Eh ? If your only income in the years when you were 'on the books' was as an employee and your income was paid by your employer through the PAYE system then I'm a little surprised that you've a bill of £10k.

BTW HMRC are a mess at the moment.
