    He really is an arse.

But it got me thinking, what could they possibly have instead of a shoot out?

    Obstacle course? Rock Paper Scissors?

a w@nk off ? first 5 players to complete win the tie for their respective team.

However, they will be using a well thumbed copy of Razzle with Seb Blatters head superimposed on to each lady.

Decided by phone vote on Premium rate number, during the voting a world star will sing to the crowd to give time for votes to be polled and then some jumped up talentless twot will deliver the result to the awaiting masses.

The winners are..silent pause (time to go get another beer from the fridge)........Barnsley FC. Gertcha.

I have what I consider to be a serious alternative and have thought this for a while - ready to be shot down!

Each player shoots into an empty net from the centre spot.
Or something similar - spot further away?
This rules out the guesswork of a goalkeeper etc and is purely down to a players skill and any external weather conditions.

Each player takes it in turns to take a pot shot with a AK47 at Sepp, team that kills him wins. Both teams can fire at the same time, if you hit their lass its the equivalent of a golden goal.

I see your point there, I think the only problem is that it could go on for a long time!!

Other than what you suggested I can't see a better alternative to penalties.

I have said for years that the current situation puts too much emphasis on luck and individual players. Its a team game, so should be sorted out as teams.

I would have the following procedure... if after extra time ( which is fast becoming a waste of time, as once 90 mins have been played lots of teams then play for pens) if after this time we dont have a winner. each team nominates one player to leave the pitch, and every 5 minutes after that, another player is nominated to leave the pitch.

I believe it will take a maximum of 15 mins and one team WILL score to decide the winners.. this will encourage teams to actually try during extra time and gives it more a
team winning it rather than an individual losing it feel.

    I await your comments..

Game of attack and defence. 4 a side. 5 attacks each. Max of 1 min, end of attack if ball goes out of play/half.

That becomes a bit like the golden goal though. Always an anti-climax.

Radical idea - how about having a replay

Always used to do it for things like FA cup finals for example

Wont happen of course and Pens are here to stay - too much excitement in the penalty shoot out for it to ever be dropped

I think that even though it is an individual, they are part of that team and therefore it's still a team effort.

I love the tension of penalties, and the fast that they can make heroes (or villains) out of people.

For example the last kick of a ball that Drogba had for Chelsea won them the Champion's League.

Akinfenwa's miss, or Colgan's save that got us promoted.

    That's the magic of penalties.

Simple. The team that does less chelping at the ref, bairning, diving, shirt pulling and general cheating goes through if the scores remain the equal after extra time.

No idea. Definitely not at work, though. Honest.
That would be fantastic. Gets my vote.

I reckon that instead of the penalty spot, the shooter should be able to place it anywhere in the "semicircle" just outside the penalty box.

The goalie can stand anywhere in his 6 yard area.

    5 of them each

Be a bit more interesting and avoid all the crap about keepers staying on their line, moving etc.

Goals in open play should decide a game. I would change the offside rule in extra time play. I would have it across a line with the 18 yard box instead of the half way line. in other words it creates a bit of the old "goal raking" ie more goal chances..
It used to work when we were kids and played no offside.

What about going down to statistics, most shots, most shots, on target, possession etc etc

To use stats is probably the right thing to do, but it's so boring!!

I always liked the idea of taking a player off each every 5 minutes

until someone scores in extra time - usually extra time is such a bore fest - half an hour of centre backs passing the ball to each other with no one really wanting to commit players, having to lose a player every 5 minutes until someone scores would make for interesting tactical decisions - imagine when it gets down to 2 keepers and a couple of outfield players, would be great!
