Shay Given has been hospitalised after being stretchered off during Newcastle United's 2-0 win at West Ham United. The Republic of Ireland international sustained suspected abdominal injuries after a collision in the box with Marlon Harewood. It was thought Given would be okay to travel back to the North East with the rest of the Magpies squad. However, soon after the end of the match, an ambulance was called to take Given to hospital. "He has got abdominal pains and is going to hospital to be checked out," said a Newcastle spokesman. Hope He's Back Soon, But If Out For Few Months, Colgan To Get Recalled To Ireland Squad Next Month?
RE: Shaved Gibbon Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given will be out of action for six weeks after undergoing stomach surgery. Given suffered a worrying-looking injury during a collision with West Ham's Marlon Harewood at Upton Park on Sunday. The Republic of Ireland international was immediately withdrawn from the action, with Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder revealing subsequently he had suffered a 'small tear in his lower stomach'. After undergoing surgery, Given spent Sunday night in a London hospital, and the keeper will now continue his recuperation ahead of a possible return date at the turn of November. Steve Harper saw action as Given's replacement at West Ham, and will assume first team duty in the former Blackburn star's absence.
