Got the opportunity to go watch them last night really enjoyed it but very odd rooting for a team with Sheffield in their name. Would go again but probably not on a school night two late uns for young Alfie this week. Some great sporting venues on the old don valley stadium with more investment to come according to one the blokes we went with.
I can't recommend a Sheffield Steelers game enough. Crowds regularly over 8,000 make for a cracking atmosphere, and you can occasionally drop on cheap tickets (I think it's £8 this Sunday). They're absolutely flying at the minute too, so you're almost guaranteed to see them win. It's very family focused too. My only gripe with the arena though is the speed in which the catering kiosks get queues down. It's worse than Oakwell. Though it's something they've just announced they're going to invest in shortly.
Young Alfie training with his age group at park steels and guy that coaches them has links with the sports played in that area. He gets complimentary tickets and the group goes for free and they have been to the Steelers, unfortunately they were there that night that poor guy lost his life. That aside I hope we can go to see them sounds really good.
Seen both Sharks and Steelers with the young un in past 12 months, felt the same - can't support anything to do with them, they were both free tickets. We won't be going again, detest the city.
You can’t beat a night at the ice hockey! My son (also an Alfie!) is doing ice skating lessons with a view to progressing to hockey skating. He still comes to most reds matches with me but the Steelers and (bizarrely) the Arizona Cayotes are definitely higher in the pecking order. We were there that fateful night and he was badly shook up as you can imagine. So I’m delighted he’s started the lessons and wants to be a pro hockey player when he grows up as I thought at the time it would put him off for life. It’s definitely more family friendly than a football match and a great night out with plenty going on. Very much recommended. Admittedly it doesn’t make me feel the same emotions as watching the reds does but that’s probably not a bad thing, don’t need any more stress!!
Went to watch steelers twice in the early 90's, my mates sister was a season ticket holder, both times we sat with away fans, can't support owt from that shitoyl........sithi.
I'm trying to water down his hatred as he might end up playing with a good few next season but last May did little to ease that I'm afraid. I did as s74 said find watching it far less stressful as didn't really care who won
We have ice hockey teams in Sheffield. None to my knowledge in Barnsley. I have no problem anyone supporting em. I used to go on a few occasions. when they started. 90 to around 98. Great for the younger end with the razzamataz..But I believe it's much more expensive in real terms today than yesteryear. I used to get a family ticket for £10-£15. So was a good nights entertainment. v The Notts Panthers. Great atmosphere for young uns. Can't do with the razzamataz missen. But neither can I with 20/20 and its spin offs cricket. But doesn't stop me going on occasion.
Must admit the razzamatazz isn't for Me but like you say the young uns love it ,grown ups chanting defence clap clap every time opposition get the ball will ever catch on at Oakwell any time soon.
