GS stated for those who were listening that "they" so i presume GS & PC had suggested certain players to Ritchie who they felt were worth a look, But GS said that Ritchie wanted to stick with what he had by giving players their chance.
My take on this and Certainly a couple of journos i know is that Ritchie has been told he has £5 to 7 K available for players but the players whom have been suggested by the board who would "put bums on seats" have been rejected by Ritchie. I am aware that one player suggested by PC and GS is Shipperley and Shipperley has stated that he would come back to Oakwell.

    There's no way..

We could afford Shipperley's wages. Not a chance. I doubt we could even afford a percentage.

But if I'm wrong - the loan market isn't closed, and if we get in trouble, I'm sure we'd re-contact SUFC.

The blunts did not pay all that well

Their wage bill has been low ish for some considerable time.

I doubt shipperley was on more than Mcfrail for instance.

Not that I am saying Shipperley is what we need like!

Sheff United are poor payers........fact.............and Shep did say

last season, more than once, we have offered AR money for players and he has turned it down
But if the crunch comes, and we find ourselves with suspensions and injuries and we start losing then I dont think it will be AR that gets it in the neck
Look at the posts on here, you can see whats happening.......its going to be SHEPHARD OUT being shouted at the WELL
But this could easily be the wrong target

    Sorry mate...

Sheff Utd have been paying large wages for the past 3 or 4 seasons and I mean top wages.

Ashley ward for instance was supposedly on £15-20K per week.

    Not that I heard

they have been on a tight budget for some time.

Not that I know like but I thought it was common knowledge.

I doubt Ward was on that type of wonga in the championship given his failure for bratfut & injury history

One of the largest squads though

hence the 17 strikers Warnock signs every season!

They have a wage cap and if a player won't fall into it they don't get signed, simple as, Warnock reckons it creates a good team spirit as there's less of a gap between the highest paid player and the lowest on the pitch.

    RE: Not that I heard

Forging ahead on the pitch, United have invested in the size and quality of the playing squad. The interims show a wage bill of £3.6m for the six months ending 31 December 2005 - a 50% increase on the previous six month period.

7.2 million for 1 year is pretty high!?!

Ashley Ward was reported to earn between 15-20K per week.

That was even mentioned on football heaven when he was injured constantly.

    Large squad

7.2m does not equate to a load for 40+ players + management / directors / backroom staff.

I doubt Ward was on 15k given that would have equated to more than 15% of the total wage bill

    Pikecasters wage bill is 3.5m

RE: Could still get him on loan if....

The need should arise in future, but we have two forwards both on three goals. Haven't they done as much as forward/ striker could be expected to do so far? Now, if Richards were to get injured and we were down to only one fit target man it might be different.

The philosophy is straight. The current Reds squad is seen as a unit. It is one, more or less, which delivered promotion last season with a tremendous final push. It is a young squad which is united and could go places, given the experience of the Championship this season. Ritchie's philosophy has worked - he has been loyal to the players, just replacing those who left - and he wants loyalty in return - and is getting it. At a time when so many lay-abouts with big names might be available, not give their worth, make the team envious, destablise the wage structure - I say, good on Ritchie - some values you don't often see these days and they deserve to succeed. You Reds!! The same ones as last week!

    Sorry again...

Playing staff does not include backroom staff. The full piece talks only about the improvements made to the squad.

And that is still twice as much as Doncaster so no correlation really.

Then why oh why have we been publically declaring interest

    in other players?

    It does not add up.

We lack any strength in depth.

too many injuries / suspensions to key players and we will struggle to field a decent 11.

    sorry again

but 15k a week still is almost 11% of the total wage bill.

Unlikely given the size of their squad that they would commit such a slice to one injury prone player.

Even assuming you are correct that the 7.2m is for playing staff only and the figure quoted is accurate.
