The 31-year-old was instrumental in the club's promotion to the Premiership last season but is yet to appear for the Blades in the top flight. United boss Neil Warnock feels the striker needs games to get his fitness to the level required. gerrrim in!
Ritchie says no to Shipperley: From the Star Reds 'no' to Shipperley BARNSLEY'S striker search will not include an inquiry about Sheffield United frontman Neil Shipperley. Shipperley, a former Oakwell favourite, is expected to become available for a loan deal, but Barnsley manager Andy Ritchie is not interested. "He is too similar to Marc Richards," Ritchie said. Richards and Hayes have both weighed in with three goals for Barnsley and will resume their partnership against Stoke tomorrow at Oakwell. Barnsley are looking for their first three-point haul from a home match. "They are a big, physical side and they'll give us our first real test of that kind," Ritchie said. "We expected a physical challenge from Colchester but they've changed the way they play. Stoke have some big players and they play it down the middle so it will be a test for our centre-backs. "But we've come up against that before, we're ready for it." Centre-half and skipper Paul Reid will be partnered by Bobby Hassell tomorrow. Ritchie was today checking on the fitness of understudy goalkeeper Vito Manonne. The Italian has had a problem with his toe all this week. "If he's not okay, we've got Kyle (Letheren) to stand in," Ritchie added. Letheren has recovered from a shoulder injury.
"He is too similar to Marc Richards" .... .... bet Shipperley's happy with that comment! Not having a go at Richards, I quite like him, but he isn't quite in Shipperley's league just yet in terms of being a proven goalscorer at this level. A bit of competition for places never did any harm either, would be a good loan signing in my opinion and might get a few more fans through the turnstiles into the bargain
Too Similar To Richards ? God that comment makes my blood boil. Shiperley would be the experienced striker that we do NOT have and learn our young side so much. He isn't planning on going for him who the fans want, the team need, and would put bums on seats. But he went for CKR who is SIMILAR to most of the strikers we have at the club as in cannot score and young. Someone teach the manager what "similar" means.
agreed I like Richards, and think he IS very like Ships, but I think Ships could teach him a thing or two. I think Ships would be THE IDEAL signing to help Richards out.
RE: Too Similar To Richards ? I like Shipperley but I can see Ritchie's logic about styles. We do not have a tremendous amount of pace up front (Nardiello excluded) and so I think thast is why he targeted Kazim-Richards. We cannot give Richards and Hayes grief as these guys are in the top scorers list and doing a good job. It is suiting their game more this season in that teams do not sit behind the ball against barnsley as they see us as a decent bet for 3 points. Hayes doesn't get in a lot of goalscoring situations but does a lot of good link up play. Richards is strong on the ball, retains posession and spreads it wide and gets back into the box, remember Hayes' goal in Cardiff owed a lot to Richards getting it out wide quickly.
Warnock wants Shipperley to go out on loan in order to get fit. From what I remember, Shipperley took an awful lot of getting fit. It could be that we have to put up with Shipperley for a couple of months whilst he gets fit, only to find that Warnock takes him back just as he startr to pay back our hard work. Leave it to Ritchie to sort it.
