AN OFF-DUTY South Yorkshire police dog handler was attacked by a gang armed with iron bars. But his specially-trained police dog was set loose during the attack and bit three of the men as the gang repeatedly kicked it. The officer, who is not being named, was driving home through Mapplewell in Barnsley after finishing work when he came across a disturbance in the early hours of the morning. The police officer pulled his car up near the Wentworth pub on the A616 when he saw a man and a woman arguing near a mini-bus which contained a large group of women. When the arguing couple and the people on the bus spotted him parked nearby around 15 of them - men and women - ran across the road and attacked the policeman's car with the iron bars. Although he identified himself as a police officer the violent gang continued to attack his car - smashing windows. The officer suffered an injury to his thumb and his car was badly damaged during the attack. It was then that he set his police dog free and although the gang repeatedly kicked the dog it bit at least three of the gang members. The attackers then ran away and boarded the bus as the policeman called for help from his colleagues. Despite the damage to his car he followed the bus as he talked to the main control room. Some time later the minibus was stopped in Deepcar, Sheffield, and a group of 10 men were arrested. One man needed treatment for dog bites but his injuries were not serious. Three more individuals were arrested some time later. The police dog was today being examined by a vet PC Adie Waites said: "Fortunately the only injuries the officer sustained were minor, but anyone who attacks a vehicle and someone inside it with iron bars runs the risk of causing very serious, if not fatal injuries." Police are appealing for information from anyone who was near the Wentworth pub in Mapplewell at 2.25am on Sunday to contact Barnsley police on 01226 736349.
RE: "Dog subdued" Just talking to somebody who works with him; the dog will probably get retired as it is traumatised, and it was supposed to be the hardest, fiercest dog they had. The gang were leathering it with iron bars and it was begin to whimper. The off-duty cop legged it hoping the dog would follow, which it did. He came back to find his car smacked up and the gang still around. Followed them to Stocksbridge when the coppers came.
"Retired"... ... to the bottom of the canal in a bag of bricks. "Swimming with the supermarket trolleys".
RE: "Retired"... Canals are full of abandoned cars, shopping trolleys and trussed up torso's of Eastern European prostitutes. Not deep enough anymore, I'm afraid.
RE: "Retired"... Not even if you stood on the dog's head? It's purely academic anyway. The "traumatised" dog will enter a spiral of depression & will either hang itself or do a bridge dive. I bet it's an Alsation. Or a German Shepherder.
