I've recently moved to Wombwell and don't know the area very well at all. I've decided I'd like to shop local for meat, bread, groceries, etc. Having got used to supermarket shopping it's too easy to pop round the corner to Tesco, so I feel if I knew some local butchers and other shops I'd be more inclined to go to them. So if anybody has any recommendations it would be much appreciated.
There's plenty to choose from. Tesco, Heron's, Fulton's, Potters, something to suit every pocket. We have had some decent meat, sausages, and liver from Potters.
Cheers, I'll have a look at Potters. Wanting to try and stay away from the bigger places Like Tesco, trying to do my little bit to help the smaller local places.
Stalls in main shopping area in front of shops.couple of decent stalls there but not a patch on the old wombwell market I'm afraid
Great memories of going round the old market with my nana. Having to lug it back up hough Lane to Bond field crescent afterwards too lol.
Wombwell Top Market........... Top market was another asset Barnsley Council sold off so they can keep pumping millions into the Town Centre. They even sold our toilets off which they never maintained correctly. Like the changing rooms at Mitchells which they didn't repair after vandalism and in the end they were in such bad state they had to be pulled down. Assets sold so far: Wombwell Baths - allegedly too expensive to maintain but they spent £750000 on the Metrodome pool at the time they closed them. That was the figure quoted to maintain Wombwell Baths for 10 years. The Town Hall Top Market High Street Toilets- No public toilets left now in Wombwell. The Cole Brothers who have a very good Cafe and ran the High Street Committee who worked tirelessly to improve the Town Centre have now given up the ghost. Without them Wombwell High Street would have had no Christmas Lights and this year there are no hanging baskets. The 3 Wombwell Councilers do nothing to fight cuts in Wombwell and just follow the Party line. Barnsley Council are nothing more than asset strippers.
Re: when did they shut Wombwell baths then ? it was sold in 2011 for £81,000 not long after it closed I think.
