Should BFC be concerned by rising attendances at Athersley Rec/Shaw Lane etc..?

Nearly 1,000 fans at the Shaw Lane vs. Athersley Rec match last night - seen lots of comments from people saying the match last night was well worth the £4 admission...not very often you hear people coming out of Oakwell saying that match was worth the £25 admission!

Great to see local non-league teams doing so well and getting the support they deserve though!

    I think your totally right

How many people would have attended that match if Barnsley were at home the same day . I reckon at least half .

    No.

Barnsley's attendances are dependent on Barnsley's results.

If we win regularly, and score plenty of goals, people will want to come and watch.

Other teams are just a nice distraction because we aren't doing particularly well, and have been on a downward spiral ever since the transfer window when Drinkwater and Vaz Te left.

Once that changes, and we're seven or eight unbeaten, looking more competent defensively, and the best manager in our history is beginning to resemble the man he was back in the good old days, other clubs will be an afterthought for people who declare Barnsley to be their team.

As a follower of both BFC & Rec I can speak from experience. The ST holders IMHO won't be swayed in general. But I can vouch for the performances/value for money at BFC home games is paramount to keeping the interest of the casual fan, pay on the dayers.
Know quite a few who go to the Rec now who were ST holders for 20+ years. And the numbers are growing, not that it'll ever sway to hurt BFC........ but

Rec match £5 for me £2 my lad, burgers x 2 @ £1.50, few tinnies for me and some pop for my lad, and change outta £20!

BFC £25 just for me to get in. Ask my lad now when BFC are at home and Rec are aswell and he wants to go to Rec!!! Helps as ball boy..... BFC have no incentive to make me want to take him there before 3pm. The club deffo need to up the match day experience 'off the field' at least or risk losing a generation of fans.

I don't think BFC need to be concerned. I think most people see Shaw Lane/Athersley Rec as a refreshing change to the norm, rather than a replacement for BFC games. Perhaps if it was just one club, with a pretty good chance of reaching the Conference within a short space of time, maybe they could steal a fair few fans from BFC, but not enough for concern. Really hope botrh clubs continue to grow though, love seeing lower level football clubs flourish.

Rec...I can understand. Worsboro Bridge...I can understand. But why Aqua Farce, the plaything of a Wendy, has any attraction to a Tarn fan is beyond me.

The whole football set up should be rather than Barnsley. It's not really the club's fault: if you want a team that can remotely compete then that's the mathematics of the situation, even in League One. If you want regular football a season ticket works out around £14 a game- still a bit more than the tenner I'd say was a good price, but what can we do short of revolution or making Barnsley a non-league club? It's messed up. I think the club are trying more than they have before to connect

It's still not much better than Sunday League football. I'd never pay £4 to watch two pub teams, especially one from Athersley. I remember Eldon Youth, Cricket Club, Ward Green, Worsbrough Bridge, Wombwell Main etc all having decent sides at one stage. It'll be short lived, they've gone as far as they can. 1,000 for the two biggest local clubs in Barnsley in a derby match when there was nothing else to watch. Definitely don't think Barnsley have anything to worry about. I remember Worsbrough Bridge having a purple patch in the 70's when they had over 2,000 at Park Road for a game against Blyth Spartans. Barnsley were getting about 6,000 at the time.
