should we sympathise with those dying from alcoholism?

judging by many comments on here re George Best it would seem that many say no and that he brought it upon himself. i think that argument just shows that many feel that alcoholism is not a real addiction in the way that smoking is.

a few questions for those that feel that he brought it upon himself....

    1) should we not sympathise with those dying due to nicotine abuse? afterall they could have stopped?
    2) should we not sympathise with a young kid dying after a car accident? afterall, if she hadn't have got in the car she wouldn't be in intensive care would she?
    3) should we not sympathise with old slowly dying relatives? afterall they brought pneumonia etc on themselves didn't they by not consuming loads of vitamin c all their life and for not winning the lottery to give them majestic health care?

any illness people has.you.ve got to sympathise with ' but he's had chance after chance.for fecks sake hes got somebody elses body parts & still he's stupid enough to **** it up with booze he's had his go someone else would have made better use of that precious body part than he as. he's a lovely person an i bet the family of the person it came from agree.i'm not saying i want him to die but he'll get no sympathy of me...beats me how you can class him with some of the examples you come up with....

Not sure about your 1,2 and 3 there....

....but I'm with you on the lack of understanding re alcoholism and the erroneous assumption that there's an element of choice involved.

It would help if more people understood that alcoholics don't enjoy the luxury of rational thought.

"many feel that alcoholism is not a real addiction in the way that smoking is" - I tend to feel it's the other way round. Why is it acceptable to have a crowd of people outside the office building entrance smoking and discarding tab ends, why are smoking areas designated? Don't think the company would look on it the same way if an alcoholic was stood outside with a beer and throwing the can on the floor.
I often feel it's smokers who don't accept that they have an addiction.

The first step is in admitting you have a problem!

What a load of utter ****

you have a drink twice a week - 3 points

a couple of glasses of wine and a couple of bottles of beer on Friday, same again on Setdi when you go out for a meal - 2 points

Once a month you go out with your mates and have 5 or 6 pints - 2 points

Because you went out with your mates, you couldn't put the kids to bed - 2 points

You feel a bit guilty about that. - 2 points

You can't always remember everything that was said on these nights - 1 point

Total 12 points and according to that test you should go to see a doctor. So someone who just has a few drinks to unwind at the weekend, but doesn't get drunk, never drinks in the week, and has a little bit of a session once a month but doesn't get ratted has an alcohol problem? What absolute wnak advice. I'm sure the nation's doctors want their surgeries filled with people who have no problem at all.

And by half one we'd had 12 pints, a kebab, some bad behaviour and a hug by a huge bloke. Well, some of us did.

If George Best couldn't help himself with all the help & support he has had, heaven help other alcoholics.
