Just to reassure everyone, this is a serious campaign lobby site and came to me through a credible source - a hostile-environment photo-journalist who works for the Guardian amongst others and is a personal friend. You will receive occasional emails for human/animal rights and environmental campaigns. They have no political/nationalist bias and I am sure most people would prefer to be made aware of such things and use their voice to affect change. Power to the people.
That is an horrific story, petition signed. Some areas even have signs put up by Islam fundamentalists saying you are in a shariah law area.
Everything about this is abhorrent and I've signed the petition, but I believe the Avaaz site is misleading. It makes it sound like she will be on the receiving end of the public flogging for being raped by her father. However, articles on news sites appear to claim she will actually be whipped for having consensual sex with another man. So that makes it alright then? Of course not. Taking a whip to someone for having sex is absolutely outrageous. Direct me to a petition to stop that and I'll sign it every day of the week. But I do think the Avaaz site should be a bit more clear with the facts about the case. I can't imagine I'll get away with this without being called a lovely person.
