Appointed Caretaker 22/11/06 - Had an immediate impact as the reds won their first two games under Simon Davey's leadership after a dreadful sequence of results that had seen us win only 1 of the previous 11. A further victory against Burnley and draws at Leeds and home to West Brom secure Simon the job. 8 more victories in the latter half of the season secure Barnsley's position in the Championship; a task that looked almost impossible when Simon Davey took charge in November. Signings of the calibre of Campbell-Ryce, Souza, Muller & Foster are added to the squad during the summer and help the reds reach the upper echelons of the Championship in the autumn. In December, with the reds still in the top half of the table, Simon Davey is rewarded with a 4 year contract. Crucial injuries to to Anderson De Silva and Heinz Muller are key factors in Barnsley's loss of form in the second half of the 2007/2008 season, but Championship survival is again secured with a game to spare. Meanwhile, in the FA Cup, Barnsley become international news by beating both Liverpool and Chelsea as Simon Davey guides his team to the semi-final for the first time in 96 years. The summer sees the reds invest £1.2 million on Iain Hume as Simon Davey identifies the big money striker that the fans have been calling for. Allied with the signings from the transfer window at the turn of the year, the squad now look capable of doing well in the Championship. Barnsley get off to a slow start in the 2008/2009 season, but with clean sheets against Derby, Southampton and Norwich and only the odd goal conceded against Blackpool, Cardiff and Doncaster the signs are there that the defence can more than hold it's own in this division. As Jamal Campbell-Ryce, Anderson De Silva and Heinz Muller slowly return to full match fitness the Barnsley team begin to click and destroy local rivals Doncaster 4-1 with only 10 men in a scintillating display! Meanwhile, Barnsley break the record for fielding the youngest ever player in football league history when Reuben Noble-Lazarus makes a late entry as substitute in the game away at Ipswich town. And million pound man Iain Hume is beginning to find his feet and has scored two wonder goals against Derby and Doncaster. Simon Davey has twice proven he knows what it takes to keep a club in the Championship despite the limitations that managing one of the divisions smaller clubs entails. He also knows how to win the big games as victories over Liverpool, Chelsea, Wolves and West Brom have demonstrated. As the injured players reach full fitness the team now look capable of moving to a safer position in the table under the guidance of Simon Davey. Keep Davey In - For God's sake. You can spin things both ways.
That's pretty much as I see it Despite his perseived faults and lack of experience, we have had far far worse managers.
Jay you are my hero what an absolutely superb post, posting on behalf of the supporters who consider what is actually happening/happened instead of posting knee jerk rubbish whenever we get a bad result great post
To be fair...
...it's been pretty bad so far. The knee-jerk stuff comes after a good result.

Simon Davey - proper facts.
http://www.barnsleyfc.org.uk/bbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=121632&mid=804055#M804055

RE: To be fair... i see what your saying but we are not long into the season at all and the doom and gloom is as if we need 6 wins out of the last 7 to have a chance of staying up!!
The pro-Davey people keep looking at the start to this season and... ... stating we have turned the corner. I'm taking into account the form since January, 2008, which is absymal, plus the fact that he has almost the lowest PPG of any manager with 2 season under his belt, which I think is a fair duration to assess someone on. That, plus my biggest complaint for a relatively poor club like ours, is freezing players out and also his total lack of PR / communication skills.
Simon Davey - some more proper facts. 1st season 5 points from relegation. 2nd season 3 points from relegation. 3rd season 2 wins from 10.
Have to admit This season I've been tested to the limit in terms of sticking by Davey - felt enough is enough a few times. BUT I would sooner have the stability of keeping him (and being proved wrong) than seeing him sacked (and letting the Davey Out Brigade have the joy of being proved right). Just hope we've turned the corner. Time will tell.
A much more factually correct account and closer to the majority opinion but the vocal minority on here that seem to hog most of the airtime whilst escaping the real world will try with all their might to resist any sensible and pragmatic view. Writing cheques for the owner just cos they've made up their minds that they dont like Davey, refusing to admit they could be wrong and worse still, hoping we get beat so they can get on another rant. The worst kind of shitty so called supporters, imho, that we can do without.

RE: A much more factually correct account and closer to the majority opinion Surely the fact that we have been pretty **** since last January should count for something, we have played well every now and again like Watford (A), Preston (A), Cup games and now Donny (H) theres not many more performances that i can think of which have been any good. His PPG is shocking and according to the club thats what did for Ritchie.
Lose at Palace and lose to the fowls at home, how many would still want to keep him in charge?

Educated guess based on the interest we had last time, the candidates interviewed and the scope/money available after being in for over £10million and having to find the dough to pay up the remainder of a 4 year deal. Educated and realistic, not EA Sports world.
RE: Kevin Blackwell ? Careful about George & Dragon manager - few unfounded allegations last season left to someone else to sort out Dave Penney?
