Look like from the offset he is making sure we know what qualifications he's got so he doesn't get a Tarmey bashing..... SIMON DAVEY EXCLUSIVE Simon Davey IT has been an interesting week for new Academy Manager Simon Davey as he looks to get his feet under the table and get to work at Barnsley Football Club. Speaking to www.barnsleyfc.co.uk, Simon said: "I came up through the ranks at Swansea City and spent five years in all in South Wales. I then had the chance to move to Carlisle United for three years and then spent four with Preston North End. "As a player I captained Carlisle and Preston. I always wanted to be a footballer even though I am not from a football family. I won two championship medals during my time with Carlisle and Preston. "Unfortunately I was forced to retire through injury when I was just 27 and David Moyes offered me a job as assistant youth team coach there. I was then promoted to youth team coach and Head of Youth Development before leaving Deepdale last July. "I suffered a prolapsed disc in my back when I was just 21 but managed to get over it and battle back to play for another six years. Unfortunately I had a training ground accident with a medicine ball at Preston which did it again only this time it was unrepairable. My right leg immediately went into spasm and I was forced to have an operation with a neurosurgeon which brought back the feeling although I was never able to play again at the same level. "I do not know what David Moyes had seen in me but he took a chance and offered me a coaching position with Preston. I knew I had to repay that faith and have worked hard for the last seven years to get my coaching badges. "I spent seven years coaching in all and worked my up to getting my UEFA Pro Licence, which is the one that allows you to manage in the Premiership and has caused all the problems with Glenn Roeder and Gareth Southgate in recent weeks. "As a coach the highlight of my career has been earning my UEFA Pro Licence. It took me seven years experience to get that far and the course is a one-year intensive programme of residential work, essays and visits. Just getting one a Pro Licence course is difficult because it is by invitation only and I was lucky enough to go for mine alongside Micky Adams, Lennie Lawrence and Ian Rush. It is a lot of hard work but I am really proud to have earned it. "My playing career was cut abruptly short and it was a massive shock to both my family and me. I had thought about coaching but as a player you never really consider just what you are going to do when it is all over. I owe David Moyes a lot". He added: "I left Preston last summer and spent a year going around looking at just how other countries looked at youth development. I went to Metz in France and spent time at American soccer schools to get some fresh ideas and look at a new way of doing things. "When the role at Barnsley came up I was delighted and could not be happier with the way things are going. I had played here as but just did not realise what the standard of facilities were. There are Premiership clubs that do not have what we have here and the training facilities for our young players are unbelievable. "It is a pleasure to come to work every day. "The staff and players have been fantastic and have made me feel very welcome. Everybody is working hard and pulling in the right direction which can only be good for the Academy. "We are trying to do things a little difference and we will be taking the U18s out to Holland later this month for a training camp. They will play some games in an international cup competition and it will give them a look at other footballing cultures as well as allow us to spend time with them. "We are trying to build a programme to improve what is already a good Academy set up and we will try anything we can do to move it forward. "The young lads have trained really hard this week and I have been impressed with their work rate and commitment. If they can maintain that then we will go far. "The young lads here are of a better standard than when I had at Preston, although you are competing with some very big clubs in that area for players. Recruitment is always fierce but the staff here have done very well to get some quality youngsters into the system".
