I've always thought we should employ him as a scout and send him abroad. He might not have been the most popular manager we've ever had but he certainly had an eye for a player. (Davey actually did a good job keeping us up in the Championship for 3 years, getting us to the FA Cup Semi-Final and giving us a good league cup run. I felt for him because people had decided they didn't like him as soon as he was appointed.)
Seem to be a few good Irish and Scandinavian players over the years in the top flight leagues that weren't too expensive
Simon Davey was terrible manager who set us up to play out 46 nil nil draws knowing that occasionally you'd get lucky and get a one nil win that would see us just about stay up. Didn't he once play 5-4-1 with 3 defensive midfielder? As for his eye for players, I doubt very much that it was him scouring the far corners of the globe fr players but most of the ones who did come in had the heart of a pea. Anderson de Silva, mostto Leon, colace and odejayi just about add up to one Josh screen in terms of work rate. Sure he signed a few good uns but with the amount of **** he through at the international wall, some of it was bound o stick. He didn't have an eye for a player he just signed so many players that some were bound to be OK.
Those tactics don't make you a terrible manager. That is how Burton Albion and Burnley got promoted last season. I don't remember it being that bad anyway, we had some very entertaining games in his reign such as the 4-1 trouncing of Doncaster, the 3-2 win against Burnley and the 3-0s at home to Hul, Bristol & QPR.
IMO he set us up to play to our strengths in his opinion Whether that was right or not is debatable but he kept us up on a larger budget most managers have had since . He was marmite among the fans with the vast majority not liking Marmite mainly because he didn't know how to manage his relationship with the fanbase . His integrity was laid bare with the Darlington fiasco and that didn't help him in this country but I hear he's doing very well gor himself in USA. Coaching
Can't have been that bad to keep us up for three years - I agree he had a good eye for a player. One of those who is a decent coach or scout rather than a manager who could move you forward
I thought he was very good at spotting players but not very good at putting them into a successful team. It's hard to know for sure but it felt like he spent a lot more money than any manager we've had since & didn't do any better in the league
If you can't appreciate the talents of Anderson Da Silva I fear a vampire has stolen your soul. I liked Davey for the main part definitely a good talent spotter.
Anderson da silva was quite simply the best player I've seen in a red shirt didn't even have to move why he didn't get game time in front of Leon osman is beyond me!!
I thought i knew little about football, it appears im not alone and some folk know even less.lol ....Davey a good manager.....please your having a laugh.. ....youve got to be joking...right Dont get me started on that waste of space ....in my opinion he shouldnt be let anywhere near a ball let alone a football ground.... Ever again I hated him with a passion.....see my previous posts on the subject....he got lucky at liverpool the numpty was shouting defend defend and the players ignored him and went on to win.....im shutting up on the subject i said enough about him when he was here to make my blood boil....terrible manager....
If I remember rightly, Simon did offer to go and pay the travel expenses out of his own pocket when submitting his request list....and ..the results got Davey the sack.
Simon Davey had more money to spend than any manager before (apart from Wilson in the Prem) or since. Was the most loathsome individual who's managed the club (see his exploits at Hereford and Darlington) And picked Kayode Odejayi 80 odd times. I think the last one's the clincher.
