I don’t understand why quite a few see this as a bad appointment. Granted you probably won’t see fast flowing attacking football but you can’t hide behind the fact that he’s had 4x promotions from League one. For me, football is all about winning and there are so many different ways to win a game. Bassett wasn’t attractive in 2000 but he got us to Within a whisker of playing in the premier league. The right word to describe Graysons style of play is “effective”. It works and we would be a hard to beat team. I don’t care how we get back to championship as long as we “get there”. I want to see Barnsley challenge next season and if that means we become less attractive to watch then do be it. Football is all about winning after all. To say he’s failed at Sunderland is an understatement as due to boardroom trouble and constraints behind the scenes, I’m sure even Neil Warnock would have struggled with the dead fish there. At Bradford, there were problems behind the scenes once more and it was Grayson himself that decided to walk as the board wanted him to sign for the season. Tells it’s own story really. Grayson for me is what Neil Warnock is to the championship. He knows how to get out of it. He stabilised Preston and Leeds in the Championship and for me would be a good choice to appoint.
Did we not score a record amount of goals in the 1999-2000 season under Bassett, would say that was one of the season I really enjoyed. Big Ships, Brucey and Higgy scoring for fun, would say it was more than attractive
We didn’t play attractive football in 2000 ?!? , we’re you there ? . Record points, record goals scored , a penalty miss away from the Premiership . I wouldn’t be disappointed with Grayson
Maybe I could word my post better by saying that people initially didn’t want Bassett because of the style he supposably used at previous clubs. What I’m trying to say really is that Fans didn’t want Bassett in the beginning, a bit like Grayson and the familiarity it quite similar if you ask me. Both managers were and are effective in what they do
I would not want Grayson, think it would be a move backwards, but if he came I would get behind him like I do with all our managers/H.C.
I’m quite interested in seeing peoples opinions on why they don’t want Grayson? What reasons would yours be kind sir?
He has got blackpool Huddersfield Leeds and Preston promoted from league one. He has a proven record of getting teams promoted from league one. Not sure he would be my 1st choice but could do alot worse.
I don't like his stile of football not entertaining for me, can never get over the way he sent Brown on to do a job on Butterfield for Leeds, we can do without that sort of play .
Gash at Bradford but track record before that of getting teams similar size to us (other than Leeds) promoted from League 1.
Not for me , his performance at Sunderland was poor & no matter what was allegedly wrong at Bradford he managed to take them from a play off position to a comfortable 12th ! Having said all that , if he gets the gig he will get my support
I rate him, what makes me laugh is when people knock Grayson, McCarthy etc for style of football & then they’ll suggest Crowley brothers. Brilliant. We’ve got big physical players likely to play in Moore, Potts & McGeehan. If we get some manager coming in trying to play nice passing football we’ll get nowhere as the players don’t have the ability to play that style of football. Isgrove & Hedges are likely to play out wide & neither of them are capable of playing possession football, they’re very direct & pacey. Play to your strengths, if we want pretty football we’re going to need a whole new front 6 which isn’t going to happen
I suppose Grayson, like his style of play, is a bit 'Marmite'. Do fans go to Oakwell hoping to see an entertaining game of football or to see Barnsley win at all costs ? Ideally we'd like to see Barnsley winning by playing entertaining football; but under Grayson's effective leadership that may be a 'Bridge too Far'.
If it was Grayson or any other British manager - WHY haven’t they been appointed by now ??? WHY IS IT TAKING SO LONG ??? Unless we are waiting for a playoff manager to become free then all this speculation of current British managers is pointless. I reckon - if it’s not a playoff manager then the interviews are being conducted abroard. Maybe this potential manager is such a high flier he needs convincing that dropping into the 3rd tier of British football - but joining a club with very ambitious very wealthy owners - is a good thing.
What were you saying about impatience YN ? Why do you not practice what you were preaching ? It could be something quite simple what is causing any delay, if actually there is a delay , for example , the current season has not been concluded or certain candidates might be on holiday , or any other number of things but the appointment will be made , thats for sure
