WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT WE WANT IT MORE

Posted on:Mon 16 Mar 2009

REDS boss Simon Davey gave his thoughts ahead of the massive match with Crystal Palace.

Simon said: "We are going into the game with the same squad as last weekend but we will also have Stephen Foster back with us after suspension. We are hopeful that Anderson de Silva will be available as well. I spoke to Anderson over the weekend and he has told me that he will be ok but we will have to wait until he gets here before making that decision. His family is still very, very upset but he has said that he will be alright.
"We have missed Anderson. We have missed Stephen Foster and Andranik Teymourian. Just when we had the look of a good side we have been forced to change things around again. Hopefully we will have everybody back in the next week and things will pick up. Diego Leon has also been with us but he needs some more work out on the training field. He has been out a long time with a hamstring problem and we cannot afford to rush him back too soon.

"Of course I am thinking of making changes following last weekend's game. We lost at home and you can be sure that there will be some changes. We know where we went wrong and we have to put that right.

"We have sat down and watched through the video. We have been honest, frank and I have put my point of view across. We have told them what they should have done better and they have also had their say and voiced their opinions. We have to move forward now. We have ten games to go and time to get it right. We have experience in all departments who have all had their say. We now have to take note of that and put it right.

"We are fine. We have been in this situation before and have experience of what is needed. We will keep calm and focussed and we will not worry about what other teams are doing. We have ten games left and we have to make that count".

He added: "This situation is nothing new to us. It is not nice but it is not new. We know how important it is to this club and to this town to stay in this division. We do not want to be in League One and we have ten matches and ten cup finals left. We have to go out and do our jobs.

"When we have had a fully fit and available squad we have done well this season. When we have had three or four players out we have struggled. We strengthened in the transfer window and our results picked up but losing Anderson, Andranik and Stephen Foster has hit us hard. They are big players for us. We do not have the size of squad to cope with losing three or four players. That has affected our results and our performances.

"We have not even looked as thought we know how to pass the ball in the last two matches and that is not like us. When you have a settled side players do better. When you have to change it around the players who come in sometimes are nervous; they look at the league table and start playing percentage football. It is not due to direction from the management - it is more about a switch in the players' heads that makes them not want to take risks or make the mistake.

"In November and December we were playing a more attacking style of football and the players were not worried about trying something more charismatic in their play. We have to make sure they get back to that and there is no pressure on them. We have good players here and we want them to go out and show that. We have to make sure that the team we put out are in the right frame of mind. If they are not then they will not be in the side. We have to be right.

"At the end of the day I am responsible. I pick the team, I buy the players and I pick the tactics. If we go down then it will be my fault. If we stay up and do better than last season then I should get the plaudits. We have to make sure that we stay focussed. No one wanted to be in a relegation battle but that is something we have to put right.

"I went to see Crystal Palace last week at Burnley and they were two goals up and coasting. Suddenly they were 4-2 down and lost the game. That is the division we are in and every game can go any way. They then went to Swansea and picked up a fine win so it will be a tough task for us. Crystal Palace will be very organised, they will work hard and they have some exciting youngsters in their side. They are probably the only team in the division who cannot go up or down and have nothing to play for. They have no pressure on them and can relax. We have to make sure that our will to win outdoes them.

"Neil Warnock will send his team out to win at all cost. We have to make sure that we want it more".

COME ON SIMON AND THE LADS!!!

I want nothing more than to see us win tonight and string some good results and form together. I know more and more of us are jumping on the "sack him" bandwagon, but I think it's fair to say we all want the best for the club - and if that's keeping Davey and seeing us climb the league then that will suit us fine. But considering the players we have we must certainly be competing higher in the league than we are now, no excuses. If we don't have strength in depth then that's Davey's fault.

A win tonight will make some of us a lot more optimistic! COME ON!!!

Haha I thought the same. Speaks well, gives me real hope ahead of the big match, only to be left utterly deflated come 10pm.

When he says we have been in this situation before and it's not new to us, it just makes me chuckle, he can't see what he's saying surely!

And he really can't be saying that losing 3 or 4 important players is the reason for us being in the bottom 3. Particularly when one has only been with us a few weeks. PC can't be buying this.
