WE WILL GO THERE WITH A SQUAD TO WIN THE GAME - SIMON

Simon Davey

REDS manager Simon Davey gave his thoughts ahead of tomorrow's trip to Southend United.

Simon said: "We have brought in David Lucas, who is an experienced goalkeeper who I have worked with at Preston. We have been a bit short in that department over the last couple of months and we needed some strength there. David will come in and work with Nick Colgan.

"David will come in and work in the goalkeeping department and both players will be vying for that position. That is why we have brought him in.

"David has trained with us although he is not match fit yet. We only have Kyle Letheren as back up at the moment and he is only a young kid and so to throw him into what is a relegation battle would not be fair on him. We have brought in someone with more experience.

"We have also signed up Grant McCann. Grant is a good footballer and we have taken him from Cheltenham and he adds something to our midfield. He can score goals and will stay here for the next two years. There is still more to come from Grant has he has to settle in to a different level but we have been very impressed with what we have seen in training.

"Grant has to get used to a different league and he ahs some great attributes. He is creative and is willing to learn and work hard. We know what he can do and the longer he is here the better he will get.

"We have an offer in for Dwayne Mattis although that has been rejected. We are still in the process of talking to Bury. We are talking at Board level and hopefully we will come up with some arrangement. Dwayne is someone who I have watched closely - he is a tenacious midfielder who can score goals and is a player who would add to our squad.

"Looking at Lee Williamson, I think the lad will go where he wants to. Watford are in the Premiership so we are fighting with the big boys there. We are in the market for those players and if we can pull them off then it will be great for the Club.

"There are quite a few other things on the go at the moment and it is difficult at this time. We have to sort things out and some teams want fees, some want swap deals and some want player exchanges so we are working hard on that. It is not as easy as people think especially when clubs do not want to let their best players go.

"We are still working and have a few things ongoing. We have spoken to many players and hopefully there will be more in".

He added: "The last week has been great. I had a great experience when I was the caretaker but now I am the full time manager here and really looking forward to it. We have to move on and we have a job to do. That job is to stay in the Championship and we will endeavor as a staff to do that. We will give everything to do that.

"You can only steer the ship when you are caretaker and you just do everything you possible can to get results. I am sure there were people wondering whether I would get the job so it is nice to get rid of that uncertainty. Everybody is settled now and everybody knows what direction we are going in. We can move forward.

"I have signed an 18-month deal and I am delighted. I'm very pleased, it's a fantastic opportunity at a fantastic club. We're sure we can do a good job here. The work ethic will not change and we will strive to stay in the Championship. You are only as good as your results and all I would ask of supporters is to give myself and the staff the chance to prove ourselves."

"Where do get experience from? The Club could have appointed a big name manager but there is no guarantee that he would come in and have any success. I have been in charge for six weeks - that's my experience. There are managers out there with plenty of experience but who have never managed in the Championship. I am confident in myself, in my staff and in my players that we can do the job.

"Bids will go in for players in this transfer window and it will be up to them whether they join us. My qualifications speak for themselves and I know a lot of people in the game. You are only as good as your results and if we can get those and stay in the Championship then I am confident that the players will come".

He said: "We have a lot of cup tied players, a few injuries and a suspension to deal with ahead of tomorrow's game at Southend United. We will go there with a squad to win the game. We will have Paul Reid and Brian Howard with us and are not too bad.

"It would have been nice to have Kyel Reid, Antony Kay and Grant McCann in there but that is what we have to deal with. We want to win the game - winning breeds confidence and we need to win. We want to win and hopefully get a good draw in the next round".

So pleased he had a "great week", he should try working with some Wednesday fans, they've made sure I've had a "great week".

    Don't worry though ...

... he'll get the players fired up for the League One fixture next year against Swansea.

    New BFC dictionary entries:

Box Office = Player who was recently two league below your team, no fecker has heard of & costs half as much as conference players are going for
Squad strengthening = Offering £25k for a basement division player
Experienced Manager = Someone who has never managed a club at any level
Modern coaching techniques = Same techniques, just coached by someone recently qualified
Knowledge of the game = Printing reports & making dossiers
A great week = Losing heavily to your nearest rivals, whilst offering very little resistance & playing Robbie Williams in central midfield

    Any more?

Benefactor - A person who puts money into a club in order to improve and develop it. Also, takes an active interest in the running of the club in connection with that investment.
