...................what progress has the club made? Yes we all know that he saved the club from extinction and we will always be extremely grateful for that (to the extent that I have always advocated a statue should be built in his memory when he leaves). Even so, when compared to the John Dennis years what progress has the club actually made? For example, has any thing been built? Is the infra-structure of the club stronger? Has the playing staff improved year on year? Looking around the ground and the training facilities - and then reading messages on this message board that say at least another 12 players are needed (just like every other close season in the last 9 years) makes me realise that since Pat Cryne took over the club has been stuck in 2nd gear on the inside lane.
The Barnsley public have not given equivalent support. We need gates similar to those of Leicester/Derby to generate the money needed fo return to the good old days. Transfer fees and wages since the Dennis era have strangled the likes of Barnsley, Swindon and Millwall from competing at the higher levels of the Championship. Swansea, Middleboro' and Cardiff have only managed to do so due to new stadia, that appear to have attracted a public that was reluctant to watch them before.
? We had decent crowds back end of League 1 promotion and 1st couple of seasons back in The Championship. We just didn't take advantage of it. The support is there - it needs to see results on the pitch before we get numbers. Tinker with pricing and the like all you want but until 'the club' gives one of the managers as much time & money as it gave Davey then we are doomed to repeat the past few seasons ad infinitum
Despite having a fairly rough patch these last few years, I think he has done brilliantly with us since taking over. He hasn't got the funds to be spending millions every summer like a lot of Championship clubs and we still stayed in the league, all but by most seasons last day. And these rough times over the last few seasons haven't been entirely his fault as decision making was made for him due to being ill. He took over when times were tough and we nearly didn't have a football club. He then ran the ship to a mid table finish (not a million miles away from play offs) and then promotion to The Championship. For a businessman who is worth £40 million (?) when other owners and chairman in The Championship are worth treble that if not more. Apart from this season and the season Bristol City got to the Championship play off final, we've been in and around them in the league and their owner is worth £2 billion. I may have rose tinted glasses on supporting Cryne for what he has done Totally admit, we haven't improved since Mark Robins was here but managerial appointments can be blamed for that.
Cryne said in April he asks himself whether he thinks he has been a success. Did reference he has taken a team from mid table third tier to mid table third tier in a decade. I believe we have made progress.
In what areas do you think we've progressed ? Not being combative, just interested in alternate views.
No he didnt. He bought the club after it had been saved from going out of business and he could have bought it before Doyle did. Yet he somehow didnt buy it until after . Strange that !!
In my view we haven't gone forward, backwards or even side ways. We are stuck. As for the lack of support..........which comes first..........chicken or the egg?.......OR..........increased support or the successful team? The directors are there to prime the pump.........that is to say - to create the successful team that then increases the support..........which, with increased revenue creates an even better team. But its not happened since Pat took over. And - Pat has always said that he stepped in to stop the club going out of business and his aim was to then sell the club to a owner that could take the club forward. But, this has not happened either. Why? I would suggest that Barnsley Football Club has come to be a sort of hobby to Pat Cryne in his retirement. He knows he cannot take the club forward but he's not that interested in that as long as he is involved at the top. That's not fair to the club, the fans...........and more importantly - THE TOWN. A strong football club increases the welfare of the whole town.
That Doyle saved the club when we were on the verge of extinction during admin. A fact that can't be argued with.
I was told on good authority that Cryne was out of the country and asked the administrators to keep him in touch regarding the sale of the club. The administrators never got in touch and when he got back the deed had been done.
I thought it was quite obvious that Cryne didnt save the club, Doyle did. Cryne had the chance but didnt. What else is there?
Simple fact is when you have crap teams like Bournemouth nearly bankrupting themselves aiming for the Premier League we were always going to be forced out. Sooner or later the bubble is going to burst and sensibly run clubs like ours will benefit. Oh, and the investment in youth seems to have paid off under Patrick.
