Someone alluded to the fact that the singing was great yesterday but could have been more positive about the reds. I was sat behind a bloke with his 7 or 8 year old daughter who jumped up and shouted, "Sit down you f*ing di*kheads, you set of f*ing tos*sers" when Peterborough fans shouted for a handball. I was there with my 9 year old and 14 year old daughter and had to explain what was being sung throughout the match, "you're dad's a lovely person and so are you". Why is it that people find it acceptable or are unable to speak these days without swearing?A lot ofconversation ina lot ofpublics place these days seems to include f this and f that. Have we lost the inability to speak, have I turned into a prude or is it now acceptable and commonplace to use it in our every day conversation and especially in front of our kids? What enjoyment do we get out of calling someone a lovely person for 30 minutes during the game? Cue abuse - I'd appreciate answers without the language!!! ;) but I'm expecting answers with one or two words!

i think you just notice it more cos you've kids

swearing has always been very commonplace.

i knew someone would whinge about that song :D just be happy that there were 4 groups of fans who wanted to start songs and sing. without us the nailbiting moaners would just create their usual nervous tension

the players really appreciated the support.

It's the result of a society of ignorance, which has flourished under Labour's "do what the hell you want" "human rights" policies over the last 10+ years.

I would also single out the bell ends who deemed it neccessary to shout a conversation during the minutes silence. Couldn't tell if they were in our seating area or the Peterborough section but whoever it was should receive a damn good thrashing.

You might as well give up Chris

we've been in cultural and moral decline for so long now that it's probably irreversible.

Selfishness and pig ignorance are the bywords of today's "society".

Oh, and it's all Thatcher's fault.

    How is it Labours fault?

I can remember the first time I heard someone use the f word was at a Barnsley match in 78 - swearing has always been at matches - and noit doesn't make it right but it will take a lot to move away from the culture

Was it croups of kids/youths swearing though?

They don't know right from wrong these days, and you can't touch them due to the Nanny state.

To be fair to the people you could hear in the minute's silence. They sounded like they were outside the ground in the car park area from where I was. One bloke telling his lad to ''come on or they'll miss the game.''

It's the culture in society that's the issue LR, not just in football, and it isn't confined to swearing. Yes, it started before Labour took over but what have they done about it? Adopted soft liberal policies as Amos says, and allowed it to get worse and worse.

It is a nanny state but swearing has always been around at matches since I first started going

Can remember nearly 25,000 people shouting who's the basta** with the knife during the cup game with Liverpoolin 82?

I agree it all began wi Thatcher - thanks for the replies, apart from the first one seemingly vilifying me for complaining about the song. It seems the quiet minority/majority (not sure which I am in now!) are criticised for having a different opinion or set of values. I'm not against some of the swearing and chanting and take my girls to the football expecting them to hear some things they wouldn't usually hear (and hence get a better idea of what real life is going to be all about) but for people to find the chant from yesterday acceptable is a bit beyond my comprehension. I can remember asking why Ronnie Moore was a 'w*anker' when the brewery stand were singing it to him and he threw his teddy out in the 70's/80's but to explain away that yesterday was more difficult. My eldest said, Listen to that dad, it seems that more people join in when the Leeds bit starts up! It was noticeable how much louder the Leeds bit was that the dad song. Good debate tho!

I appreciate it's commonplace at matches but don't expect it from a bloke with his 8 year old daughter sat one row in front of me, or from a bloke directly behind me at Swillsbro. I can swear with the best of em (in the right circumstances - hypocritical I know!!!) but wouldn't dream of screaming some of the stuff in front of kids etc! Or should I not be bringing my kids? The reason I take the kids away is for the better atmopshere and the experience of going away with the reds, something that I feel they should be doing as proper fans of their home town team. Wonder how many Man Ure fans would put up wi sitting on seats like them yesterday? lol

She was playing on her Nintendo ds pink and i might have used bad language. I must say sorry but at times i just get a little bit mad and im passionate like the rest of the 1000 there yestoday. I lost it when the ref gave foster that yellow card.

I'm 14 and I've got to say I don't like it when people are swearing in songs like that, but I do understand that swearing is now a big part of football whether we like it or not. It feels awkward being around lots of people swearing like yesterday and if parents are taking there children along and joining in it can make the child feel left out. Most children do want to act like their parents and it really isn't good example setting if you're swearing like that. Luckily my Dad made a point of not joining in swearing at games and it helps children understand that it isn't right to do it if the person you care about isn't doing it. I'm all for a great atmosphere and I know that there will probably never be a game that I go to without swearing but if you see you are around children try hold back and help parents make it a more enjoyable experience for the child.

If you read the original thread again

and get the flavour of what I was trying to say then you'll know that I'm not after you apologising in the manner that you have - I'm not after an apology from anyone in fact. I must say that I can't detect any sarcasm at all in your post, but my point was, when (as a society) did it become acceptable to stand and swear vociferously in front of 8 year old kids and repeatedly chant the owrds 'Your dad's a lovely person". You appear to equate passion with swearing. I managed top vent my feelings at the same appalling 'decision' without a tirade of expletives from the Viz profanisaurus. Just becaue you call the refa tw*t doesn't mean you're more outraged than me! And what does it matter that the girl was playing on her Nintendo? She was there supporting our team wasn't she?

I said that about that girl so if her dad reads this he new it was to him. Maybe its different for me and the others who don't go with there kids and just go with there friends or on there own. I do try and think about what i say before i say stuff at oakwell because i no there his kids around me. I also do this away when people are standing because if they are young again they might not see what his happening. I personally was not chanting very loud when that was was been sang but If a kid was there with parents i would have moved because you could see what they was going to do when they got in to the ground.

That yestoday was a passionate game and the barnsley fans went at it hard from the start. There was a kid there though what was chanting it and his dad told him what they where singing and the 8 year old kept chanting it.
