He wasn't exactly stood at the front of the picket lines shouting 'scabs!' tho' was he? TBH I do think there is a stereotypical image of what Barnsley is like, and what Barnsley people are like, but I don't think there is anything in that stereotype that would stop any of us getting knighted. If anything, people don't expect a lot from Barnsley, so they tend to see people who come out of town as rags to riches types (which we all know is a load of B*ll*cks) - but it would help you to get knighted more than it would hinder you.
