I'm under pressure from teh family to switch our Orange/Wanadoo (£18 a month) broadband for a Sky+broadband package. Anyone got any advice what to go for? I think we would want the sports and films. Thanks and sorry to interrup the threads on who the new manager might be.
If your wanting to go HD, go with Virgin. Their standard recording box is HD, unlike Sky who have sky+ box then Sky HD box. Rip off. Broadband is loads better than Sky and so is customer service.
spoke to a Virgin salesman a couple of weeks ago he advised me not to pay the extra for HD, as I would not see any difference on my 38" tv
I just got a great deal from Sky last week I have been with them for a few years, I got an offer from Virgin for their package and then called Sky to "cancel" Sky are really on a push at present and offerred me free HD for 3 months plus free HD installation. Great deal You're a new customer and they love em ... Go for it - the HD is fantastic
RE: Any thoughts on HD? Bit confused by Amanda's statement to go with Virgin for hd. How many channels do they have running in hd? Don't think it is more than 6. Sky has easily the most and if you've got a big hd telly then it has to be the choice. Make sure that Sky do the broadband/tv offer in your area cos they don't everywhere.
RE: spoke to a Virgin salesman a couple of weeks ago That's just plain wrong; not sure where he was heading with that info. Assuming your set is plasma or LCD, you'll notice a huge difference.
Virgin have now 6 HD channels running and more to come And yes there is a difference in the HD and normal ESPN is free with the XL package and football is vastly different in HD on that channel.
HD is a waste of money Yes it is marginally better than SD, obviously, but not that noticable. You're still watching the same programme. Contrary to all the hype, it doesn't blow your socks off, doesn't make you feel like you're "there" and won't make crap television more interesting. In a typical shot, most of the picture is out of focus anyway (say if the camera is focused on the actor) so you're not gaining anything. Half the time, digital encoding jaggies reduce picture quality anyway (in the same way that a JPEG picture can be large in pixels but low in quality). The only time HD really excels is in panoramic vistas, which funnily enough is all they seem to show on those HD demostration videos in the shops. Such shots rarely feature in regular footage. Tune in next week, when budmustang will be telling you how **** mobile phones really are.
Agree to an extent I saw HD in the States and there was a marked improvement, however for me the biggest leap there with HD is that broadcasts are in 16:9 (widescreen) and standard definition (SD) in the US aren't, whereas here you get SD in widescreen. Got to be Sky for HD though, far more channels, 2 (soon to be 3, may already be) Sky sports channels in HD plus about 10 movie channels - don't see those being on Virgin any time soon.
You'd need both They are a bit of a bugger, most footie games will be on 1 but they also put some on 2 (England games), also I think you only get Sky Sports Extra if you subscribe to both and that has additional Champions League games on. Talking of which, another thing to consider with Sky - the "red button", CL they have additional games on, as they do on last game of season. Same if you are interested in American Football (NFL) - they have an alternative game on the red button. I've also got ESPN, mainly for the American sports.
