Can somebody tell me if you don't have any of the sports channels can you get football/boxing matches on pay-per-view, or do you need to subscribe to Sky Sports?

    TIA

Depends what you are meaning here

Do you mean can you get PPV without subscribing to sports channels when there's an event on (e.g. boxing) - in which case yes.

If you mean can you pay for individual games rather than subscribe - e.g. last nights European games, then no you can't.

Football is not on pay per view

No it was the boxing I was thinking of, probably just getting the variety package but wanted to check I could still buy boxing as and when.

    Cheers

If it's a PPV fight then you don't need to subscribe to anything in order to order it

I cancelled my subscription last year, but if I contacted them again could I pay month by month without getting hooked into another contract. Thinking of getting it back just for the Ashes and then cancelling it again.

Did you cancel the whole lot or just Sports?

If it's just sports you can subscribe just for a few months - if the whole lot I'm not sure.

My mate cancels his Sky Sports sub after the playoff finals and starts it again for the new season.

You can re-subscribe on a monthly basis to premium channels like sports or movies, so long as you have some package already. They will bill you in advance though and you will get a rebate if you cancel after one month. I do it all the time.
