I have been on this remote island of New Britain for two months now. Not a sign of another Brit. But I did hear rumours of someone else from Yorkshire in the area. Finally met Dr John on Friday evening. (for info I am also Dr John) He also works on Cocoa (perhaps not a surprise) He is from Cudworth and is a REDS fan. Of course who else would you support? And he proudly told me he was a Wembley 2016 scarf, in spite of being here since 1980. Think we need to get a flag made New Britain Tykes
He was a scarf ? Suppose you have to take what comes. A bit like the Tom Hanks film, Cast Away, where he befriends a basketball. First sign of turning looney !
I was in Zaragoza in April 1981 on a business trip and we played Rotherham (won 1-0 to clinch promotion). I didn't know the result but saw a bloke in the hotel next morning with The Daily Mirror so I asked him for the footy results. The conversation went like this; him "who are you after?" me "Barnsley" him "they won 1-0, where are you from?" me "halfway between Barnsley and Doncaster" him "go on" me "Bolton-on-Dearne" him "go on" me "Ringway estate" him "I live in the Dunk houses estate" (about half a mile from my mum's). He was something to do with mining also on a business trip.
Re: I was in Zaragoza in April 1981 on a business trip If it's coincidence time, me and the missus were in Sydney on holiday and had been to see Wilco in a small club about 5 miles from the city centre in quite a quiet suburb. At the end of the gig there were about 500 people all trying to get back into the city, not really that many cabs around. We saw one filling up at a petrol station and tried to get it but it was already taken, the couple already in the cab said no problem we'll share so in we get. We exchange pleasantries and the female half of the other couple asks where I'm from, "England" I reply. "Yes I'd worked that out, whereabouts in England?" "South Yorkshire, do you know it?" "A little, whereabouts in South Yorkshire?" "A little place near Barnsley" "Called?" "Wombwell" "I'm originally from Darfield" She had moved from Darfield about 5 years peviously and married an Aussie and settled in Cairns a good 1,500 miles from Sydney, they had flown in just for the gig!
Re: I was in Zaragoza in April 1981 on a business trip Saw his old band Dr Feelgood last week, brilliant gig.
Re: I was in Zaragoza in April 1981 on a business trip That`s exactly how i describe my bringing up, Small mining village halfway between Barnsley and Doncaster.
Re: I was in Zaragoza in April 1981 on a business trip Similar. "Small mining village in Yorkshire, halfway between Barnsley and Doncaster" "Is it near London?" "3 hours north" "Ah, quite close then." Bloody Americans.
Re: I was in Zaragoza in April 1981 on a business trip In Dallas in 1980, cab driver says "Hey your're English, where are you from?" Hmm I thought, he won't have heard of Yorkshire never mind Barnsley so I said the place where I was living, "Cambridge" I said. "Is that near London?" "Not too far, 60 miles north." "That near Paris?" "No Paris is in France". "Paris-France, London-England, you know I always thought they were in the same country."
Re: I was in Zaragoza in April 1981 on a business trip Born in me grandmothers in Goldthorpe but lived in Thurnscoe from 4 days to joining up at 16, parents still in Thurnscoe.
