Never understood why smoking while driving is ok.

Amount of times I have personally nearly crashed because the end of the cig drops between your legs while driving

What difference is the between a phone in one hand or a cig

You can hold the steering wheel and your cig at the same time, change gear, use you indicators and be in full control of the vehicle. You can't do that when holding a mobile phone.

I passed my test when I was 17. I'm now 42. I've driven over 750,000 miles, the vast majority of those with a cig in my hand. I've been in one traffic accident, but I wasn't smoking at the time. I'd like someone to point out to me how my smoking while I drive has made me unsafe.

Is it actually legal then? I have done it but never knew if I should have been - the dangerous part is getting the thing lit.

Lets say thats 375,000 miles while smoking at an average of 30mph = 12500 hours. If the average cig takes 5 minutes then that is 12 per hour. Thats 150,000 cigs throughout your driving career. Each cigs reduces your life expectancy by 11minutes. 150,000 x 11 = 1,650,000 minutes. so far, you have shortened your life by over 3 years *just* while driving.

Oh you meant more unsafe to other road users :)

I can't see it being an issue I just despise folk chucking tab out of the window. But that is because I'm very anti littering

I thought it was already illegal? Doesn't make any difference to me as not only do I not smoke, but the cigarette lighter in my car is broken.

I feel most dangerous on the road when I'm trying to concentrate on something else. I don't understand how others can use their mobile phone when driving because I don't even like looking for a radio station or anything like that. I like to think im a good, safe driver. To be honest I worry about everything so I just feel if I lose my concentration for a second at the same time as someone else does, then I wouldn't be able to react to their error.

When you light your cigarette surely you cannot be looking straight ahead

This isnt me saying it should be illegal just never understood why they allow it.

I smoke while driving constantly and when lighting the cigratte i have to say if someone crossed the road at that point you wouldn't see them

It may not be illegal, but chucking your tab out the car window certainly is.

I don't light cigs while in motion. I do it when stopped at traffic lights or at a junction. On long journeys my wife, who tends to be my partner in the car these days lights them for me. In the past my mates have done that.

A mate of mine was once hit head on by a bloke that dropped a lit cigarette, he looked down to see where it had gone a swerved into my mate, luckily no one was hurt and it was only a minor prang.

I'm a smoker and I think it's disgusting smoking in a car. So on that basis I don't do it. It'll make your car, and you, stink.

I can't understand why anyone smokes smokes at all these days. Apart from the obvious health issues and the obnoxious odours that stick to you- the cost over the weeks-months -years- ten years-lifetime is horrendous. You can buy a house with the money saved. It has contraceptive qualities also.

In my opinion it's much more dangerous to be smoking a cigarette at the wheel than talking (not texting) on a mobile phone at the wheel. You can drop the phone in the car, you can't stop a cig

I would suggest that fast food rubbish is thrown out of car windows more in my experience.

But you can hold a steering wheel and a cig at the same time with one hand and the other hand is still free to hold the wheel / change gear etc -I dont think I can hold a wheel and my iphone at the same time with one hand - not safely anyway.

I have been in cars where drivers have lit cigarettes whilst driving though and that definitely should be illegal a mate of mines Dad ( now unfortunately dead due to lung cancer ) used to steer with his knee whilst lighting up

I think arguably its illegal to smoke and drive in the same way as people have been pulled in for eating a mars bar or drinking a coffee whilst in motion - must admit on long journeys I have taken food and drink passed to me by the Mrs though I think it could be construed illegal if you are pulled in by the plod. Certainly it wouldnt be much of a defence to say you swerved because you dropped your coffee/coke into your lap
