The general lack of empathy towards fellow man and ease with which people advocate harming desperate people is quite sickening.

I hope some people in the above thread never need help at any time in their lives.

..Personally I think you are a naïve idealistic pillock with a holier than thou attitude. Wake up and join the real world. You cannot solve everyones problems for them. Come on and tell us what the answer is (and please don't start spouting guff about what the British Empire did 100 years ago. Most of these migrants are opportunists. Governments are elected to sort out these problems.

By the way, I think you will find that most of the 'suggestions' in the thread were not to be taken seriously

Desperate people? People have been starving all over the world for decades - centuries even. Did we have migrant camps at Calais back in the 80s when Geldof was doing his best to blackmail people into paying into some bottomless pot to help starving Africans? Can't recall seeing them there then, so why is it now the thing to do.

This problem has nothing to do with persecution and torturing the innocents. It is purely money driven. The despicables who take money off them at the other end that starts the process and then the carrots that foolish governments dangle in front of people at this end. "Come on in, all of you. Our welfare budget will look after you". Sickening and it has to stop. I don't know how we stop it, but it has to.

No I am retired having worked all my life and paid Tax and NI (although not yet claiming state pension) I pay Italian Tax on small private Pension income,, I Pay into the Italian Health system, had to prove I was able to support myself and claim no benefits. Incidentally the tax system here is more expensive than UK but climate and food is better. More importantly it puts an extra 1200 miles between me and judgemental, holier than thou people like You ad Plankton Pete.
As I said, freedom of movement is fine but economic migrants have no rights demanding something for nothing. genuine refugees are a different matter. Viirrtually none of those at Calais are anything other than economic migrant opportunists breaking the law.

Sorry but for me this an ideal opportunity for Teresa May and the Govt tp get their heads together, spend some bloody money (instead of cut backs) an install an effective procedure to vet people into this country.
Or we could just build a bigger fence..............sure that will deter them all!!!!!

 

That is my point! Naïve idealistic do-gooders on here annoy the f*ck out of me I am afraid, especially when they accuse me of being sickeningly heartless. It is called 'living in the real world!!' I see at first hand here in a relatively poor rural area the impact that all these migrants are having on unemployment etc and the resentment festering in the young unemployed when they see migrants playing football in the various hotel grounds where the Govt pays for their food and lodgings and gives them money for clothes etc. All the supermarkets have 'well dressed' beggars outside working til 8-5 with 2 hours off for lunch!! (seriously) and they all contact each other with Smartphones. There will be problems soon as resentment is building with the recession biting.

We can complain from here but it's quite a different view in Italy, Greece and such places. I know how I would feel if I was a struggling local watching these people whooping it up in the manicured grounds of nice hotels with, as you say, smart phones and smart clothes. I just wonder if there is enough bad feeling to cause a serious backlash against them. I suppose it's just a matter of time before the blood starts running down the streets.
