...that allows the biggest companies in the country, those that have Multi-Million/Billion pound turnover to employ fowk for free and just pay bus fare? And the Govt. still pay them JSA?

I might be being thick, but that doesn't make much sense to me. At all. Please will sumdi explain it to me?

    Ta.

Tesco's are advertising for night shift workers (normally hourly rate + premium) under this scheme.

    Every little helps. Profits.

Exactly. Wages advertised as JSA + expenses.

    Unreal.

The only problem with this economic downturn and stupid initiatives like this is that UB40 might start releasing new records.

I'm assuming this is to 'help people back into work' - bullpizzle of the highest order.

I'm assuming it's to get a bit of money in the ConDem election kitty from Terry Leahy.

He's not there but I assume his share options in his pension won't suffer if salary costs fall.

Should be a national boycott of Tesco, but there won't, them 2 for 1 offers are brilliant, even if they are afforded on the back of screwing suppliers to the floor and schemes like this.

We get what we deserve at the end of the day.

When people turn down these slave labour jobs, they will be worksy and have their benefits stopped. I'm all for suporting job creation but anyone that takes these jobs will not get a properly paid job from the company they are being used by. Jobs should be created with a living wage, then people woudl be better off working not on benefits.

Not really and these schemes are not new and not exclusive to any particular government. There were exactly the same style of schemes under the last Labour government.

Labour's were slightly different - they were primarily community projects that long term unempoyed were asked to participate in when they'd been claiming for 12 months or so. Not great either, but a damn sight better than filling Phil Green's pocket.

The fact that Tesco/TopShop etc are now advertising these via the Job Centre is, in my head, a lot different.

It's one thing to have people doing community work in exchange for their benefits, I think in principal this is ok, engenders a feeling of worth and of earning, perhaps a small increase should be given to people who do this. It's entirely different for private companies to be allowed to take advantage of this though.

    Ooops, I take that back:

    Tesco Customer Care @UKTesco
@dyson_bmv This is an error made by Jobcentre Plus. It should be an advert for work experience with a guaranteed interview at the end.

    It's a nationwide error then.

Not quite. When I first came out of the Army back in 98 I was allowed to join a scheme straight away rather than wait the required six months but the principle was the same in that you worked for a firm and in return you got your dole plus expenses. I was on the scheme for six weeks before it led to a full time job so I considered myself lucky. Going back in time further there was a scheme called ET (employment training) that ran under the last Tory government back in the mid 80's which was exactly the same thing (dole plus expenses).

Didn't realise that mate. Was the scheme compulsory or just something you wanted to do? I say wanted, I mean to get you out of the house etc.

The problem now is that for everyone of these 'work placements' with the big companies it's taking a job off the shelf when unemployment is so high.

Basic Employability Training under Labour was dole plus £10 extra plus travel expenses (paid by training agency).
