...they are investigating Top Gear for using the pun "Pikey's Peak" in an earlier episode saying they find it "offensive and racist towards the travelling community and gypsies" This after a BBC internal investigation cleared the programme of the charge. Not half as offensive as I find the anti-social and often illegal behaviour of the majority of travellers I have encountered over the years.!! Another waste of public funds in the name of PC for a bunch of people most of whom don't give a sh*t about the upset and disruption they cause to other people.
What are your thoughts on Top Gear's view on Mexicans? Racist, or just a bit of fun poked at the PC crowd?
My thoughts are the same as being called a 'whinging Pom' or when someone is called Taffy, Paddy, Aussie, Jock, Welsh sheepsha**etc etc. Sticks and stones etc. There are far more important things than taking offence at name calling when it is not intended to be vindictive or racists and meant to be humorous. Often those offended are not even those who were the object of the perceived slight. An example was the feminists complaining on behalf of the girl on the podium being sprayed with champagne that she was the victim of sexism when she actually had no problem with the experience. People would be better focussing on situations of physical abuse, corruption, genoside if they wish to vent their misplaced anger and moral indignation
I'm not being funny but why does it bother you? They 've made a complaint on behalf of the people they represent to the organisation which is the body that considers those complaints. How does that effect you?
How does it affect me? How long have you got? Two ways just for starters are all these 'offended groups' that mean publicly funded bodies waste millions of taxpayers money on inquiries and investigations that would be better spent elsewhere. Another is the fact that writers, broadcasters, comedians etc are increasingly handicapped by being confronted with a long list of banned topics and subjects that might cause offence to someone with an agenda.
So people shouldn't have recourse to complain to an independent body? Who decides who is allowed to be offended? I still really don't see how this affects you
In the spirit of harmony let us just agree that we have different opinions as to what is really important in the grand scheme of things.
Can't say as I've ever been offended in my life. There's been stuff said to me I certainly haven't appreciated and I've heard stuff I've thought to be inappropriate, but I can't think of anything that has actually offended me. Everyone has the right to be offended. However, just because a person is offended it doesn't mean something has to be done about it and that's where the confusion arises. Causing offence is not illegal, it's not even necessarily bad behaviour.
See, I was being glib. But now I feel obliged to add, that even if somebody isn't offended it doesn't make something acceptable. Hearing someone call another person ******, paki or pikey doesn't offend me, but I don't think it's ok for them to do so. But me pulling them up about that would be referred to as being 'political correctness gone mad' by some.
I will never understand why people think being derogatory to travellers is any different to be derogatory to any other group based on the group they belong to.
