    Connery everytime for me, however

the one who came the closest to Ian Flemings Character was George Lazenby . Ian Fleming was known to have wanted David Niven as his first choice Bond, but he only did the 1967 version of Casino Royale. Worst Bond for me was Roger Moore. There have in fact been 10 people who have played Bond in various media

Timothy Dalton always used to be called the closest to the books, and some have said the same about Craig.

You've forgotten to attribute your gag to its rightful source, which I believe is David Mitchell.

I once read an idea for a Bond film with Sean Connery as the baddie, and the big reveal at the end that "James Bond" is nothing more than an identity assigned to various agents over the years who are bumped off when they are no longer of use. Connery would be the original who somehow escaped and survived and is now after revenge.

    It would be summat different.

While it's probable that Mitchell's column in The Guardian is the source, it's also possible that two people can form the same idea independently.

Everyone Knows that Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin. Except he didn't. Ernest Duchesne discovered that certain molds kill bacteria over 30 years earlier and wrote a paper on it. Vincenzo Tiberio wrote a paper on the antibacterial properties of mold a couple of years before that. And Arabian stable hands had been treating infected sores with mold for hundreds of years.

You're probably right, although it is possible for two people to make the same observation independently.

One example from history is Alexander Fleming, who everyone knows discovered penicillin. But that's not strictly true. Duchesne had written a paper on the antibacterial properties of certain moulds 30 years earlier. He wasn't the first either - Vicenzo Tiberio had published a similar work a couple of years earlier. And even before that mould had long been used by Arabian stable hands for treating sores.

Having read a few of the books, and seen all the movies, I'd say Daniel Craig or Timothy Dalton are pretty close. Lazenby more so in the 2nd half of the film but not so much in the first half.
