Did the Oakwell AM team do it? What happened to the commentary Radio Sheff were supposed to be doing?
Oakwell AM didn't do owt People were having problems with the BarnsleyWorld commentary and Radio Sheffield made it look as if they were going to be doing the commentary but never did, they went to St James park about 5 times inbetween the worst selection of gay music and a really boring interview with some ice hockey dude. and on DearneFM they kept going to Pele who said eeerrrr for every 3rd word
I don't think Radio Sheffield ever said they were doing a commmentary. "Coverage" and "commentary" are not the same thing... Paul Walker specifically stated that it would be "regular updates" only. HTH, Stephen
Radio Sheffield were doing 'coverage' and not full match commentary. 'Coverage' means updates of which they are only allowed to supply 4 reports an hour ( something to do with the FL). Ill chosen words if you ask me as they gave the impression that they were covering the game from start to finish.
It was advertised on the main site that Oakwell 1575AM would be live from St James Park from 7pm onwards. However, when trying to access the commentary through our link provided by Barnsley World, we got a total silence. In the end we ended up listening to the away link which had commentary from BBC Radio Newcastle.
Later on Steve Pearson came on the BBS and announced that Oakwell 1575AM was now streaming via the away link, but we couldn't access it. Turns out that the only way we could change over the commentary was to delete temp files and cookies, close the browser and start again.

I'm not sure what the problem was, but something needs to be sorted ASAP. Can you blame anyone for not purchasing Barnsely World? The last few weeks have hardly been great advertising for them and already we have new subscribers wanting refunds.

Not everyone has a computer / broadband Let's face it, everyone knows how to work a transistor radio. Not everyone has a computer / broadband, let alone knows how to go about listening to streaming media broadcasts. The technology is not all that reliable either. Gordon needs to have a rethink on this one.
RE: Radio Sheffield were doing 'coverage' and not full match commentary. I turned on Barnsley World Live Match Console about 5 minutes into the match and couldn't get any sound on the Barnsley link, I clicked the Newcastle link and got Barnsley commentary straight away, I thought the quality of the commentary was a vast improvement over recent weeks.
I suppose you had to time it right - I definitely couldnt get Oakwell AM guys until I closed world and started again
Didnt work for me Silence on our link geordies on their link as expected. Eventually after clearing cookies history restarting everything and then clicking again on the Newcastle link I got our guys Not really user friendly though
RE: Didn't broadcast it on Oakwell AM 1575 nt That is because under the terma of the RSL ( Restricted Service Licence ) we are not allowed to broadcast over the 1575 waveband when commentating from an away ground. This is not just Barnsley Football Club and Oakwell1575AM, that is EVERY club that operates it's very own radio station. Even Manchester United are on;y allowed to broadcast over their allocated waveband when they have a home fixture.
This is Ofcom legislation.
Football Stadia operating a radiobroadcasting service are only allowed to do so on the AM frequency (FM frequency is available but only for broadcast within the stadium itself).
The AM wattage output allowed is only 1 watt
A Restricted Service Licence will run for 28 consecutive days, excpet under event conditions when an Extended Licence will be provided for event stadia to broadcast for a period of 28 days maximum throughout the course of the licence. 1 day runs from midnight to midnight.
Oakwell1575AM has an Extended Restricted Service Licence allowing us to broadcast up to a maximum of 28 days throughout the period of the licence which covers the whole of the 2007/2008 season.
To broadcast from an away stadium we have to direct dial into the PYV system which then provides the audio to Barnsley World. Last night it worked after numerous attempts to dial the signal over various numbers provided by PTV.
Plans are in action to update this syatem of broadcasting from the away venue and, hopefully, this will be in place very soon. This has nothing to do with BFC or Premium TV or Barnsley World, this is to do with the fact that I am skint and will make it happen when I can afford it.
I am now sure that everything is as clear as mud!
Andy Firth
