There's been a few threads recently about holidays, so if this dies on its arse then I don't care. The wife is away with work at the end of Feb/early March so I've booked some time off too because thats what blokes do. I fancy going away for 4 nights or something somewhere warm, where I can sit in the sun and get fat. We've got a Caravan on the east coast, but weather will be ropey so I'm gonna look at going overseas. Anyone got any experience of travelling alone? Wheres the best places? Obviously at that time of year, I'm limiting myself weather wise to the Canaries - or further afield which I don't want to do. Jet2 have a few solo package holidays, but I was thinking of booking something myself. Anyone sad enough to have done similar? Cheers
P.S I'm 41 years old and as much as I'd love to get stoned for a long weekend, I think I've left that behind sadly...
If you don't want to do anything or see anything, it probably doesn't matter where you go to be honest. Obviously I don't know your tastes, budget or current prices so it's a bit of a shot in the dark. I'd suspect you'd get some decent options for Turkey, Greece and Cyprus, though I don't know if given the changing climate and devastating fires, if trips are more out of season and pushing prices up. Italy would always be high up on my list, Cinque Terre villages were lovely but very very steep. I'd also suggest Malta. We went pre pandemic in early March and it was 20 degrees and there were loads of things to see in Valletta and you could ferry it to gozo or just go across the harbour, loads of history too with world war two and knights templar featuring heavily. Sicily is also another option, Palermo and Cefalu there were really enjoyable.
I did Palermo last February. Amazing place with some great UNESCO heritage sites and will go back. However, the weather was mixed though you will get fat on pasta and cannoli.
If it’s fat you’re wanting to get, get thissen to bilbao, then bus to San Sebastián. Craft ale, cider houses, pork restaurants and pintxos. Woohoo
If you want guaranteed sun you are a tad limited at that time of the year. But if that's not a priority I'd highly recommend the Lake Bled area of Slovenia as that's stunning or the Amalfi Coast in Italy.
I did my first solo motorcycle tour last October to Spain and Portugal really enjoyed the solitude usually travel in large group
Valencia. Got it all. Weather, history, culture, beach, snap, ale, guaranteed football on a weekend (either Valencia or Levante).
4 days in Carvoeiro. Beach, cliffs, bars, square, walks. No high rise. Not overly developed, but plenty of bars and restaurants. Jet2 generally do some deals at the Mirachoro hotel and if I had a few days by myself, sod the Reds and my mates, that's where I'd be off. @onemickybutler might back me up
Just stop at home in your dressing gown; takeaways, watch what you want and basically please yourself. The idea of having time to myself is a luxury I haven't had in 20 years.
Some very good options there - I'll have a look. I'm a boring man, but I wouldn't say no to hiring a car and exploring and eating and exploring then eating. Thank you.
You could also try Croatia, but not sure of temperatures. Likewise Tunisia if you want something different. We went to Hammamet years and visited markets and a stunning old colosseum at El Djem. I'd expect it's a bit more developed now but it had a massive beach on the old town side. Madeira might be a shout too, though I've not been and likewise Cape Verde. Quite a few people have been that I know and raved about it. If it were me, I'd go Malta or Palermo. Malta is small but you could drive the whole island very quickly. Sicily is big, but you could venture from Catania or Palermo to quite a few places and Etna is obviously there too. And in Palermo you get Arancini and Gelato galore. What's not to like?
Seville is a decent option. Not coastal so temperature bit higher than coast. Lovely tapas restaurants and bars everywhere. Went a few years back and was impressed.
