I used to understand it! You stand in front of the keeper and you're not offside !! Really!

    Yes really.

You can stand where the bloody hell you like, on a football pitch, and that alone does not make you offside.
Read the Laws of the Game ffs.

Just been talking to a friend who's a football writer of the Times and he's not sure either. Reading twitter - football writers and footballers aren't sure of the rules. Used to be standing beyond the last defender when the ball was played foward in the opposition half was offside - doesn't seem to be the case anymore

Without googling it - what is exactly the offside rule now - just out of interest

Just alter "the last defender" to "less than 2 opposition players" (because it is any player, ie their keeper can be in your half and a defender on the goal line and you can be off side)

Because it's Sir Alex and he's got the powers that be in his pocket.

Is it any wonder Manchester United are so hated?

That decision was ridiculous though - the player being there makes the defender move to the ball (he doesn't know if the attacker is in an offside position or not), so there is no doubt that the attacker was active.
