is it me in a kinda weird world, and then looking at team GB SUPERSTARS.ok So Mr Bolt runs kinda fast,,but there will be fast guys in the future. Mr Bolt is indeed a Phenonmenom..(hope I Typed that ok). but TBH the real superstars are US, yes us the Brits, we are the owners of this olympics.the amount of medals we got so far..the ceremony . the whole spectacle. Seriously after The jubilee stuff and then THAT opening ceremony I think the world are looking on and are seriously wondering just how to follow these olympics.

    seriously,you have missed my point.

yes MR Bolt is exceptional. but why are we looking at him. This has been the greatest Olympics for UK for ever..so why the hell do we care about Mr Bolt. Sorry mate I have more respect and Awe for the likes of Ennis and Sir Chris..to name just two. If you wanna worship other countries players then go ahead, Personally I am gonna just look and worship the guys in team GB, because they are the ones who are making me proud. They are the ones making the Nation proud, and also they are the ones making our kids wanting to get into the sports.. yes they do hear the name Bolt, however they also see that he is not getting gold for Team GB ..unlike ENNIS,HOY,WIGGINNS etc etc

What I am getting at is this

Bolt is the total God in his 2 events.Jessica has had to achieve all manner of events to gain her gold. Chris Hoy has got his time after time, wiggins .. Phelps. need I go on, so why is bolt so bloody special. sorry he is fast thats all, lets just see if he wins as many medals as the the real greats, I kinda am tempted to think not.

The 100m has always been the blue ribbon event of the Athletics, thats why its the most expensive and sort after ticket , Bolt is the greatest sprinter we have seen and a global star. Ennis,Hoy, Redgrave however awesome in their disciplines haven't the global recognition of Bolt because they aren't the fastest human being on the planet...Bolt is.

Bolt is a superstar ... He has an aura about him that not many athletes have ... 100m is the blue ribboned event and in this race you had the four fastest sprinters if all time plus the fact that all but one of them ran under 10 seconds - it was amazing that he finished out front . There was also a swagger about the way he did it - incredible athlete

erm he has done the double double in Olympic sprinting and the only man to ever retain his 200 metre Olympic title. When you consider how many people have tried and have failed to beat him over the years i dont think he has done too bad and also holds the world record times in both sprint events. He also posesses a personality and respects the fans and his fellow competators. Plus isn't the 100 metre Olympic final seen as the number 1 athletic title at an Olympic meeting?

    Why can't we celebrate

The fantastic achievements of Team GB, whilst still appreciating the undoubted talent of Usain Bolt? After all, one of my favourite Olympic memories was at Barcelona in 1992. The Spanish crowd rose as one to cheer and show their appreciation of Derek Redmond and his Father, caring not one jot that he was English but epitomising the true Olympic spirit. If the Spanish can do it, why shouldn't the British? The crowd yesterday were superb when cheering home the young girl from Saudi Arabia, realising what it meant for women's sport both in her own country and internationally.
One of the reasons that's made these Olympics such a success has been how the crowds at every event have not only given superb backing to Team GB, but shown their respect, warmth and appreciation to the visiting Olympians from all over the world.

great post Kev. i had to choose my summer of sport very carefully due to having a small child and not unlimited funds. whilst i had an incredible time in Ukraine and would not swap the memories for the world, there is part of me which regrets not being able to attend the Olympics as well. my appetite for major sporting events has well and truly been whetted and obviously I am lucky enough to have a World Bus o took forward to in my adopted country, but to witness a truly global event taking place in Britain - well it would seem that it was a truly once in a lifetime opportunity.

I actually agree with you to a large extent. Yes he's undoubtedly the best sprinter in my lifetime - the fastest man on earth. But the self-congratulation, the "I am legend" bit does my head in.Hmmm. Has he cured cancer? No. Enough already.

As a very slow ex-middle distance/long distance club runner, 34 minute 10k, I said the very same thing about Bolt to my wife.

Why we get so giddy over a man who runs 100-200 metres faster than anyone else at the moment is beyond me. What use is the ability to run fast over a short distance. When did it save lives. Phidipides showed that distance running did have a purpose, well 3000 years or so ago it had.

The track cyclists who broke the World Record 6 times in succession on their way to the Gold Medal, now they did it for me.

But the real stars are us, the mugs who buy Lottery tickets. We should all pat our selves on the back for the best Olympics ever.

I'm getting ready to travel to Fort William where I will climb Ben Nevis tomorrow. Have a good weekend.

I'm failing to understand why we can't take pleasure in seeing Bolt retain both his titles and also the achievements of the Brits.
Bolt is just incredible, he always appears to have an extra gear.
One of the great moments for me in this games was Karani James winning the 400m for Grenada (a population of just 100,000) and his country's first ever Olympic medal.

So, as a football fan, does that mean we shouldn't appreciate the outstanding talents of Messi and Ronaldo simply because they aren't British!?!

Too much of the Olympics is subject to nationalism for me. Yes I love to see the Brits doing well but I am also more than happy to appreciate the successes of any athlete, wherever in the world they are from. One thing the Olympics should remind us of is that we are all just human beings together on the same planet and the ideas of borders and nationality are man made constructs which have very little real relavance from person to person. Sadly the petty patriotism and Empire mentality gets in the way of that.

A lot of it comes down to what you are interested in. A race lasting ten seconds just doesn't appeal to me.

My real sporting hero for this year is Bradley Wiggins and I think both the mountain stages and time trials in Grand Tours are the second most exciting sporting events in existence so a ten second sprint is sort of at odds with what I am into.

Cavendish was my sporting hero last year, and this year it's Wiggins. And this from me, a bloke who hadn't ever watched Le Tour until a few years ago.

Can't knock Bolt though. He truly is a phenomenon. As is Phelps in the pool.

But Mo Farah would be my favourite athlete on the track this Olympics. I think his victory brought me the most joy, as a British sports fan.
