Looking past Cheapside and up Sheffield road

You would have had Woolies behind you and Burtons further round.

Brilliant decision to replace those old buildings with corrugated concrete

Baileys on the corner of Cheapside...

... big neon sign on top of a stork carrying a bairn with the words "Everything but the baby..." underneath.

Or as it said when lit up in the 80's

"But the baby" - oh how we laughed when we saw that from the Gyngleboy

It's now at Elsecar heritage centre

The traffic cop with the handlebar moustache.....

There he is.... his usual post was at the bottom of New Street intersection with Sheffield Road, maybe fifty yards further on... Is that Oldfields pie n peys caravan?........

I'd guess that picture to be around 1966

maybe it is just nostalgia.... but that is better than the blandness which it was put in its place..

    even as early teenagers....

we knew that Barnsley was losing its soul..... still, they fixed it all up by building the Alhambra Centre (yes?)

Barnsley MBC should knock down a lot of the concrete mess and extend the open market at cheap rates

This is cheapside looking back towards the junction of Sheffield road and Donny Road. The copper in the picture is a guy is the famous Bill Harbour. THat was is permanent post at that junction. He had the most amazing handlebar moustach. I was in the army with his son.
